SPYSHOTS: New Isuzu D-Max spotted ahead of launch

New_Isuzu_D-Max_1

It’s been a long time coming, but come it will. Tomorrow, in fact. We’re of course talking about the long-overdue arrival of the new Isuzu D-Max on Malaysian shores. But before we get the full details, here’s another short peek at it through reader Ibrahim Ismail’s camera.

We’ve already seen plenty of the second-generation D-Max, first in the JPJ carpark back in March, then on public roads a month later. Just two weeks ago ads of the new pick-up sprouted on our sister auto classifieds site oto.my. This final round of spyshots gives us the best view of the local car yet.

The vehicle above looks to be the top-spec variant with its large wheels, chromed wing mirrors, fog lamps, roof rails and sports bar, though what’s underneath the hood is still unknown. It’s either a 3.0 litre turbodiesel engine with 177 hp, 380 Nm or a 2.5 litre VGS lump with 136 hp and 320 Nm. There’s also a base iTEQ 2.5 in 116 hp/280 Nm tune but that’s more likely to feature in lower variants.

That’s enough for now we think. Stay tuned for our comprehensive launch report with full details and complete live gallery tomorrow night.

Malaysia is fortunate to get the redesigned D-Max, no matter how belated. It helps that it’s a RHD market like Thailand. Isuzu’s Philippine unit is still disposing of remaining inventories of the old D-Max, putting out ads in local newspapers offering limited edition models to clear stock before they launch the new one later this year.

  • I would like to have the 3.0 liter model, but the road tax is killing that dream. I hope the government revises the old parochial roadtax calculations – it does not make sense. They could base it on fuel consumption/emissions like the UK. Cleaner cars get better rates.

Fail product with small cabin at the rear seat. Hilux still the best for urban cowboy.

Clearly u have not been in the new 2013 DMax. Test it n see if u still think Hilux is better. But if u r a toyota worshipper then don’t bother…

The engine option is disappointing. Already we have Ranger 2.2 pushing 375Nm and Colorado 2.8 Duramax engine pushing 470Nm. Cheaper road tax with more power yet Isuzu’s 3.0 is only pushing out 380Nm. I wonder why they didn’t consider the twin turbo diesel like what they offered for UK variants. Now that’s a beast.
