SPYSHOTS: Isuzu D-Max – 2nd-gen coming, finally

isuzu-dmax-2013-0003

Ah, it’s spyshots galore this week, and the next vehicle to be uncovered by the lens is the new Isuzu D-Max, which played peekaboo in the Suzuki Swift Sport spyshots from yesterday. Again, master spy Anol Alias comes up trumps with a set of photos of the second-generation pickup, which is currently being evaluated by JPJ. Not just one vehicle, mind you, but an entire slew by the looks of it.

The D-Max made its debut in Thailand in September 2011, so it has definitely a while for the full model change version – which sits on the company’s new Isuzu Gravity Responsive Intelligent Platform (i-GRIP) platform – to get here. Still, better late than never!

A choice of three turbodiesel engines are available for the Thai market, with a 177 hp and 380 Nm 3.0 litre heading the list. Meanwhile, the iTEQ 2.5 litre comes in two output tunes, the 116 hp and 280 Nm as seen on the existing D-Max and a VGS version with 136 hp and 320 Nm. Transmission choices are a five-speed manual and five-speed auto.

Traction control and a vehicle stability system are to be found on the new D-Max, available in both two-wheel and four-wheel drive configurations in Thailand. Also sold in the Kingdom is a kitted-up form called the D-Max X-Series as seen at the Thai Motor Expo last year.

Isuzu should just leave the car business. Concentrate in heavy industries. They come out with unappealing cars like this, total turn off.

It’s good that Malaysia will be getting the new D-Max even though it’s belated – the Philippine market will have to wait until the 3rd quarter of this year as Isuzu’s local unit is selling off remaining stocks of the old model. General Motors has already preempted Isuzu by launching the Chevrolet Colorado twin/sibling in the Philippines.

    • GM is killing its sibling isuzu by allowing low grade product selling in the same market.

Why are you guys so against 4 speed automatic gearbox? Kia Rio also comes with 4 Speed AT. Fuel savings through 5 or 6 speed gearbox is insignificant.

Got nothing against 4 speeder auto but if a truck which usually use by traders and as a workhorse can be fitted with a 5 or 6 speeder auto, how come a sedan cannot???
By the way, how do you know the fuel save is insignificant???you tested it before???read it somewhere???

  • looking at the output figures, isuzu has retained fuel economy tunings for its engines which is clearly aimed at maintaining its most fuel efficient crown.

the areas needed to improve frm current gen are the interior space and somewhat weak pickup(no pun intended). hope the new chassis and 5 AT will bring improvements to those areas.

Malaysian market always slower than Thailand and Australia. We always categories in ‘clear up stock’ countries.

The interior is the same with chevy Colorado. But performance is lower grade. How to compete with own sibling? Unless the price is very much lower. After all, I refer to buy Colorado.

    • From my point of view, Isuzu always the lowest HP in the market clearly can be seen on previous model. But the fact on dyno machine, it is not 136HP stated on flywheel in manufacturer catalog. On wheel, it produces 138HP to 146HP. I ever drove 1 3 litre 136HP can stay tight on Navara on borneo highway. Amazing.

  • Chevy Colorado received a lot of complain from users in Sabah.. Clunking and squeaking sound here and there after several month.. Hope this Isuzu variant will be much better.. The chevy look better than this..
