RM Credit Card

Cashless payment has been one of Uber’s features since its 2014 launch in Malaysia, and the fact that the fare is auto billed to your credit card is liked by many including this rider for its convenience. But that limits Uber to those who own credit cards, and there are many who are more comfortable with cash. Its main rival Grab offers both card and cash payment options.

It appears that Uber has done its market research and will start accepting cash payments. Tests will start today in Johor Bahru. “JB, as the largest city down south, and its close proximity to KL and Singapore, provides us with the right environment and sophisticated rider and driver base to conduct this cash experiment,” Uber said.

Uber Malaysia GM Leon Foong said cash was how most Malaysians paid. “With the introduction of this cash payment test, our technology becomes instantly accessible to more people in Johor Bahru,” he said in a statement.

This announcement comes two weeks after Uber said it was thinking about accepting cash payments here. If the move spreads to other cities where its services are available (Klang Valley, Penang and latest addition Ipoh), Uber could potentially woo riders served by Grab and regular taxis.

Uber’s cash movement is still at the pilot stage, and the statement added that not all riders will see the cash option on its app right away. One can sign up at get.uber.com/go/ubercashjb and test if the cash payment option is available to them. If it is, select “CASH” as your payment option before you request a ride.
