A speculative report carried on Bloomberg on June 15 stating that VW was weighing options in divesting itself of non-core brands caused talk that Ducati would be among companies that it owned to be put up for sale. VW was quick to step in with an emphatic denial that the prestige Italian motorcycle brand was for sale.
According to online reports, Audi CEO Rupert Stadler – who also sits on the board of VW – said “Ducati is not for sale,” as quoted by Motorcycle News. This news comes in the wake of VW reeling from “Dieselgate”, with reports saying that the cost of rectifying vehicles non-compliant with emissions testing may reach upwards of USD55 billion (RM224 billion).
Reports earlier in the year stated that VW was considering letting go of its MAN and Scania truck brands, as well as Ducati. According to an agreement in April by VW with the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), some 480,000 vehicles equipped with EA189 2.0 litre diesel engines are involved in the case — fewer than the originally estimated 600,000 units.
