Willing to sing to save a few bucks? Ride-hailing service Grab has just the thing for you – its new Proud to be Malaysian encourages users to belt out a song in exchange of a free ride, in conjunction with the upcoming Malaysia Day celebrations.
That song happens to be Grab’s own version of the patriotic tune by Dr Sam, entitled Saya Anak Malaysia. On September 8 and 9, selected GrabCar and MyTeksi vehicles will be decked out in the “Proud to be Malaysian” livery, and if your ride turns out to be one of those, you can opt to pay for your ride by singing a few lines of the song. The lyrics will be available in the car itself, and also on the official website.
Grab’s campaign also seeks to highlight some of the safety measures taken by the company, both for passengers and drivers – tackling a key issue long held by Malaysians. These include a PDRM button in the driver’s app to connect to the nearest police station and a Share My Ride feature that allows passengers to share their journey with others.
Other safety features personal accident insurance covering both drivers and passengers, an in-car camera pilot programme for the top 100 female drivers, as well as training programmes for drivers to handle emergency situations. Grab has also partnered with the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies regionally to provide its network of drivers with first aid skills.
“As a Malaysian brand, we are humbled and proud of how we have won the hearts of the people to be South East Asia’s leading ride-hailing app, and with the initiatives we have introduced to expand the boundaries of safety,” said Grab Malaysia country head Jaygan Fu. “By constantly challenging ourselves, we have been able to step up our game to improve the safety level not just for our passengers but also drivers.”

Why not sing the national anthem (in fluent national language) – that’ll be more challenging esp. for some of the “oh-I-am-so-Malaysian-too” crowd.
How ironic.
Quiz:
1. Name other countries which has citizen that can’t speak the national language;
2. Name other countries whose citizenship / PR application process does NOT require some command of the national language.
(P/s: i shouldn’t tell u why this comment is in english, should i? Else, how would those people understand?)
