SPYSHOTS: Mercedes-AMG A45 R spotted testing

Prior to receiving its facelift, the current Mercedes-Benz A 45 AMG was thought to spawn an even more powerful variant in the guise of a Black Series edition, with outputs rumoured to be in the region of 400 hp. That, however, was three years ago, and the W176-generation A-Class is headed for the sunset, with development of the next-generation model well underway. Before the next one arrives, though, it looks like we’ll see a last hurrah in the form of the Mercedes-AMG A 45 R.

The present-day Mercedes-AMG A 45 already produces a formidable 381 hp and 475 Nm of torque from its M133 2.0 litre, turbocharged four-cylinder engine, so while the 20 hp step to the rumoured 400 hp mark may not appear all that sizeable, the R variant can be almost certainly expected to gain improvements elsewhere, namely the chassis.

That wider body will almost certainly clothe a beefier suspension setup to cope with the added performance the uprated engine is able to load the car up with. Beyond the wider wheelarches, much of the current A 45’s exterior appears to be unchanged, although it remains to be seen if the eventual product will wear different bumpers to further differentiate it from the standard – if it could ever be called that – AMG product, much like the angrier looking Mercedes-AMG GT R.

With the next-generation A-Class expected to make its debut at next year’s Frankfurt Motor Show, this 400 hp swansong for the current iteration of this German hatchback could make its debut before that, and with it a revelation of its confirmed model name – whether it’ll be called the A 45 R, the A 45 S, or indeed the A 45 Black Series.

Everything HKS manufactures, is tuned to surpass the OEM equipment. They have succeeded in a big way.

so lets see how much AMG can squeeze out of this 2.0 turbo for comparison

It doesnt matter. Evo use lame gearbox, if u were to compare how much produce from the engine and how much on the wheel, Evo taoau. Nit to mention on the super efficient German engines. With 370hp plus still manage to do 6.9L per 100Km while standard evo 280hp already 12L per 100KM. What a shame! And worst, it has to use Ron97!

    • I think the difference is concept doesn’t need to worry about warranty and reliability.

Dude, it’s just a concept car. Plus, they didn’t even bother to put it into production. In fact, Evo X Final Edition only made do with only around 300bhp.

      • FQ-400 came stock standard with 400 bhp…..

tho it came with a different gearbox, and you’d have to fill it up frequently….

  • As with all UK-market Evos since 2003, the MR’s numerical badge denotes its power rating. Offered only in white, the FQ-440 achieves its 440 hp via an ECU remap, high-flow fuel injectors, revised intercooling piping, and a new manifold-back exhaust courtesy of Janspeed. Torque also gets a slight bump, from 400 to 412 lb-ft. Mild Eibach suspension tweaks help hunker the FQ-440’s nose down 1.3 inches, with the rear sitting 1.1 inches lower than stock.

Only 40 examples of the Lancer Evolution X FQ-440 MR will be produced, each with a £50,000 ($83,000) price tag

The fact that all A 45 AMG are “Hand Build” & comes with a 4 year unlimited warranties speaks by itself. Need i say more.

  • This A45 AMG R will completely destroy its key rivals especially the Focus RS, Civic Type R and Golf R. Outmatched and outclassed by AMG A45.
Pityful and sad times ahead unless they tune up their engines to fight the Mercedes-AMG vehicles.
