Here’s a Chevrolet Colorado with more off-road capability – the ZR2 variant with uprated suspension, building upon the existing Z71 package for the Colorado. The biggest change is in the suspension, with a 50 mm lift, and new cast-iron control arms which increases front and rear track by 89 mm. Specific to the ZR2 are a set of 17 x 8 inch wheels shod in 31-inch Goodyear Duratrac tyres.

Keeping chassis movements under control are a set of Dynamic Suspension Spool Valve (DSSV) dampers from Multimatic, the same kind that is also used on the Chevrolet Camaro Z/28. The new DSSV dampers are said to allow adjustment in six parameters, compared to just the compression and rebound adjustments more commonly found on other damper setups.

The ZR2 has altered bodywork to allow it to tackle very rough terrain. At the front, the front fascia features deep sculpting which leaves more of the front tyre visible and able to clear larger obstacles than the standard vehicle otherwise would. Around the back, the truck’s bed assist steps have been removed to help with departure angles when negotiating steeper terrain.

Also present on the ZR2 are skid plates and rock rails for body protection, as well as electronically controlled front and rear locking differentials, while a full-sized spare wheel and tyre finds home in the truck bed. Providing the ZR2’s motive thrust via an eight-speed automatic gearbox is either a 308 hp/372 Nm, 3.6 litre petrol V6 engine, or a 181 hp/500 Nm, 2.8 litre Duramax turbodiesel more familiar to the Asean region.
