UMW Toyota increases price of 7-seater MPVs – Avanza, Rush, Sienta costlier by up to RM6,000

Looks like UMW Toyota Motor (UMWT) is the first to react to the government’s move to increase excise duty on budget MPVs by 5%, reported last week. According to sales advisors, prices of affected Toyota seven-seaters – namely the Avanza, Rush and Sienta – have gone up by up to RM6,000. At the time of writing, listed prices on the official website have not changed, but the new prices are final, SAs from different dealerships confirm.

Here’s the new deal. The Avanza 1.3E MT sees a RM3,700 increase in price to RM75,980 (from RM72,280), the 1.5E AT is up RM4,010 to RM82,980 (from RM78,970), the 1.5G AT is up RM3,310 to RM84,980 (from RM81,670) and the top spec Avanza 1.5S AT is up RM4,000 to RM87,980, from RM83,980. The range of increase for the Avanza is from RM3,310 to RM4,010.

For the Rush, which is styled like an SUV but based on the Avanza, the price hike quantum is from RM4,990 to RM6,010. The base Rush 1.5G MT sees an increase of RM4,990 from RM104,910 to RM109,900, the 1.5G AT sees an increase of RM6,010 from RM106,900 to RM112,910, while the top Rush 1.5S AT is now priced at RM115,900, up RM6k from RM109,900.

The freshest and most sophisticated of the trio is the Sienta, which was launched here last year. The base 1.5G variant is now priced at RM96,900, up RM4k from RM92,900. The top 1.5V, previously priced to duck in just below RM100k at RM99,900, is now priced at RM103,900 after a similar RM4k jump. All prices quoted are on-the-road with insurance.

The other budget seven-seaters affected by the “Excise Duties Order 2017” effective April 1 are the Perodua Alza, Proton Ertiga and hot-selling Honda BR-V, which shook up the segment this year, possibly triggering the recent move by Customs. Note that even with the five percentage point increase, the 65% excise duty for MPVs is still lower than the 75% for sedans.

We’ve checked with the three other companies concerned, and their prices remain, for now. None of the affected distributors have released official statements at the time of writing.

OMG OMG. UMW is Government owned. So this means, this is a Government gift to all the rakyat.

Just yesterday, Ertiga and Alza excise goes up which means prices will shoot up.

So pitiful. Cause Ertiga and Alza buyers are usually big families of 6 people. Thank you gomen for this gift to the rakyat.

This shows how our gomen cares for the rakyat. Whilst we suffer hardship, our Ministers are living luxurious lives.

In overseas, the poor man still can buy Camry. Here it is a luxury car

This means our national car Ertiga also got to raise about RM3k.

The shocking thing is that Ertiga got ZERO sales. 1 year launched, many people have never seen a single Ertiga on the road. Now with the increase in price, somemore, who will buy Ertiga?

And how is Proton going to pay the few hundred million ringgit royalty payment to Suzuki Japan for the rights to rebadge Ertiga?

1 year already cannot sell, now with RM3k more, lagi cannot sell

This is the type of thinking that will make the current situation to stay. This is what is called PHD – Perasaan Hasad Dengki which will make people distrust each other. Do you think those that are “richer” don’t pay tax? Will the “poor” stay poor forever? Don’t push what you don’t like onto others, because someday it might come back to you. Taxes should be fair to all. Don’t rob some people to give to others, as what is already being done today.

Result from corporatisation of Custom Agency. Once that happened, similar to IRB, they have their annual targets to achieve. Mind you IRB have different annual bonus giveout compare to other govt departments. Remember, Custom have already collected billions from GST, one would wonder why need to increase excise duty for these popular segment of cars?
Our ministers still in denial that any increase or introduction of tax will be passed down to rakyat.

From 60% to 65%, let’s say the car price after deduct insurance, import tax, gst and etc. So the price will be 90k. 90k equal to car actual price + eksais duty. 160% = 100% (car actual price) + 60% (eksais duty). If increased by 5%, 90k * 165/160 = RM92,812.50 with only RM2,812.50 of increment. This should be the max increment if solely due to the eksais duty. Remember the 90k figure that I have taken into calculation after deduct gst, import tax, insurance and etc…

With the increase, proton need bigger stock yard to keep the monthly targeted sale at 1500 units. Otherwise, they need to pay the royalty to Suzi, haha.

I think, Proton need to bring in the latest 1.2 turbo hyrib engine to enhance the sale instead of depending on the fail rebadged product like old accord and old tech from Suzuki.

BR-V with thousands and thousands of bookings placed before the increase of 5% excise duties, Honda Malaysia will have to honour the old pricing otherwise will lose their customers and ego & pride. So per 1 unit of BR-V invoiced out after this, Honda Malaysia will incur loss of at least RM4.3k. Multiply with thousands and thousand of units, wow go figure the total loss Honda has incurred. Karma perhaps?

Honda Malaysia has really really deep pockets so it won’t be an issue for this tiny mini loss, right?

    new excise duty = 65%
    sales tax = 10%
