Ahead of the W222 Mercedes-Benz S-Class facelift‘s world premiere at Auto Shanghai next week, the automaker has released another couple of teaser images of the car and presented a sneak peek of it at the ongoing New York International Auto Show.
The front silhouette image highlights the new headlights, which feature triple LED daytime running lights and the 84-diode Multibeam LED tech from the W213 E-Class. The units come with an Ultra Range high beam function.
Mercedes also gave us a quick glimpse of the full car in a video – clear to see is the new AMG Line appearance package with a redesigned front bumper, bringing it closer in line to the E-Class. The dual-bar grille is also no longer limited to V12 and Maybach models, and will be fitted across the range.
Based on undisguised photos that surfaced recently, the standard S-Class is also set to get an updated front bumper design, while the rear lamps now come dressed in the “stardust effect” rear lighting system – created with the use of crystal optics in the reflectors and a specially-configured surface structure – that was first seen on the E-Class.
The interior image shows off the revamped dashboard, with the dual 12.3-inch display screens of the Widescreen Cockpit now having a glass cover to make for an integrated large central display screen. Also to be found is a new three-spoke steering wheel, with touch controls as seen on the E-Class.
New engines go on, led by the new 3.0 litre M256 inline-six, which will also debut 48V technologies such as the 48-volt Integrated Starter Alternator and electric booster compressor. The facelift will also feature the M176, a 4.0 litre V8 bi-turbo unit.
Fresh oil burners, in the form of the turbo four- and six-cylinder oil burners from the W213 E-Class, and a plug-in hybrid version – with an electric range of 50 km – are also on the cards.
As highlighted recently, the refreshed S-Class will get the host of driver assist and autonomous system technologies from the E-Class. The car’s new Driving Assistance package has enhanced camera and radar systems, and so Distronic Active Proximity Assist is now able to make use of map and navigation data to calculate driving behaviour and conveniently adjust the vehicle speed.
Other items include Active Steer Assist, Active Lane Change Assist, Active Emergency Stop Assist (which brakes the vehicle to a stop when Active Steer Assist is engaged and the system recognises that the driver is not intervening when needed) and Active Speed Limit Assist. The last is a sub-function of Traffic Sign Assist, and recognises sign gantries and signs to adapt the vehicle’s speed corresponding to the recognised speed limits.
New functions also include Evasive Steering Assist – which helps the driver to evade pedestrians in the car’s danger zone – and Car-to-X Communication, which alerts other drivers on impending hazardous conditions. The S-Class will also get the E-Class’ Remote Parking Assist.
