Malaysia vehicle sales data for June 2017 by brand

The Malaysian Automotive Association has released new vehicle sales data for the month of June 2017, and it appears that the automotive industry couldn’t quite sustain the momentum it built up in May – which saw an 18% increase in sales thanks to new car launches and Hari Raya promos.

It’s not such a big gap, however, with sales last month of 50,275 units only being down 0.6%, or 325 units, compared to May. Of more concern is the 12% dip vis-à-vis June 2016, which corresponds to a difference of 7,087 units; even so, the year-to-date figure of 284,461 units still shades the 275,483 vehicles that were registered in the same period last year, by 3%.

Market leader Perodua had a strong month, its sales having gone up 3.5% or 610 units to 17,821 units. It’s the same story for Proton as well, which enjoyed a marginal increase of 0.7% or 49 units to 7,225 units, enabling it to retain a solid third position in the local market.

The non-national leaders haven’t fared so well – second-placed Honda recorded a drop of 3.8% or 345 units to 8,808 units, down from 9,153 units the month before. But that’s nothing compared to Toyota, which saw sales plummet 12.2% or 742 units to 5,330 units. Nissan rounded off the top five with sales amounting to 2,738 units, up by 3.3%.

On the premium side, Mercedes-Benz continues to lead with 1,241 vehicles sold, a healthy 14.1% increase compared to the month before, while BMW shifted 8.4% more vehicles to end the month with 925 units to its name. Elsewhere, it’s been a great month for Audi (+42.3%), Volkswagen (+34.7) and Mitsubishi (+26.8%), although it hasn’t been so good for Lexus (-31.3%), Ford (-16.7%), Subaru (-13.0%) and Peugeot (-13.1%).

Toyota and UMW is all smiling. They are selling 125,000 cars in 6 mths. Can project 250k for full year. Fat bonus waiting. Perodua (rebadged Toyota) which is owned by UMW had sold 99k cars. Toyota 24k cars, Lexus 400 units. No need to cry by not being number 1. They still sold more cars than Honda and making huge profit. That matters.

7 months already passed and Proton can only sell 39,000 cars. This is worrisome cause according to Proton, they life saver and white knight is the Proton Boyue and it will only come in 2 years time.

So, from now, till 24 months time, how is Proton going to pay their workers when they are losing RM4 mil per day?

And why does it take 2 whole years just to rebadge the Geely Boyue?

Increase Proton Iriz sales by moving rear number plate on top bonnet like Myvi. People hate the current design as it looks ugly like Savvy butt. It is the main reason why the poor sales yet the solution is very simple and effective. Iriz overall design is okay except its ugly rear Savvy-sque butt. Trust me and you’ll see the sales more than Myvi later.

UMW Toyota is in BIB BIG trouble.
Minus commercial vehicles,it sold roughly 20,000 cars in 6 months.
So passenger cars sales would be only 40,000m units by year end.
Honda malaysia ‘s target is 100,000 units…which is achievable.
Maybe UMW is counting on 38percent owned Perodua to bring in the profits.
As a whole,UMW is disappointingly underperforming,as far as Toyota is concerned.

Increase Proton Preve sales by redesign rear light a bit to look like an Audi taillight with chrome line across the number plate. Put chrome linings on window panels and door handles like the one in Preve Sapphire concept before. Only then the car design flaws is rectified and how it should looks like. Sames goes to Suprima of which the entire rear lights need total redesign to look like Mazda 3 hatchback as reference. These simple solutions will not involve entire car but a mild facelift reworks only as overall both Preve and Suprime bodyshell still relevant and not outdated at all.

If not mistaken, proton had stopped production for Preve. It can be temporary, it can be permanent. It can be just for a while until they clear all stocks and facelift model comes in.

Try buying a Kia and after 1 year go back to same showroom. Look for the same salesman and sales manager and ask how much they take your car for trade in. Even kia Malaysia also afraid of its resale value – they don’t dare to offer more.

Bezza keep rising after updated some shortages..Persona the exec variant cannot sell please add leather seat to the package. Ertiga have u change the ugly beige zebra skin corak interior? Saga frankly the rear not look nice. City, civic and hrv continue to conquer the non local car market. Toyota, Mazda, Kia can challenge if keep improving (pricing)

    • What?? on Jul 25, 2017 at 11:12 am

For Saga I believe they need to improve the specs to be more competitive with Bezza such as adding keyless entry/start, remote trunk release etc to the mid & top spec variants, doesn’t matter if price went up by 2k as long as people get more value out of it. Persona maybe add a 4th variant that slots on top of the Premium that adds led DRLs, six speakers & cruise control and priced at under 65k, call it the Elegance or something like that. Now that they have Geely to fall back on it’s just a matter of time before they introduce updated versions of their bestsellers(Saga, Iriz, Persona).

  • Proton is good, safe and quite affordable to own. But to maintain it, its quite expensive, even more expensive than maintaining a Vellfire. Plus, its engine, oh god, never in my life will I ever buy or own a Proton anymore. Despite the Persona have captured my heart, but Im not and will never buy a Proton anymore. Its a liability that is consuming your time and money. Sorry Proton, you may have good design and safe technology, but your reliability were getting out of hands and is getting worse. Send SC also still cannot solve the problem. What to do, just scrap out of it

    Some intresting facts emerged from the sales figures;
    1. Luxury car sales continue to go up (despite the so called gloomy Malaysian economy).
    2. The low to medium segment, especially the A,B segment is the main sellers.(And hence fiercely contested).
    3. The cheapest cars does not necessarily command signifigant sales in Malaysia.
    4. Toyota passanger car sales is falling rapidly, but is saved by its commercial vehicles, which is also falling.
