2019 to see game-changing EV battery from Toshiba?

A new lithium-ion battery from Japanese industrial giant Toshiba is being touted as a “game-changer” and promises to give electric vehicles (EV) a drive range of 320 km after plugging in for a mere six minutes. This innovation is possible with the use of a new material that doubles the capacity of the anode in its proprietary Super Charge ion Battery (SCiB), using “ultra-rapid” charging.

The new SciB uses an anode made of titanium niobium oxide that stores lithium ions more efficiently, compared to the previous version that used a lithium titanium oxide anode. A prototype 50Ah SciB has passed rigorous testing, and Toshiba claims it retains more than 90 percent of its initial capacity after 5,000 charge/discharge cycles.

During testing, ultra-rapid charging of the SCiB only took 10 minutes in cold conditions, at temperatures as low as -10 degrees Centigrade. Toshiba is projecting a market launch of the SCiB in 2019, reports Market Business News.
