Big news for Malaysian motorists! The most popular car of recent times, the Perodua Myvi, has been reloaded. The third-generation Myvi (the name has been retained) will be open for booking tomorrow, priced from RM44,300 to RM55,300. The price range is a big surprise, and here’s why.

Let’s start of with something to quash all speculation – the new Myvi is not a rebadge of the Daihatsu Boon. The upper body is a 100% Perodua design. “The all-new Myvi is a the first Perodua model to have an upper body designed completely in-house, without foreign input,” said Datuk Aminar Rashid Salleh, president and CEO of Perodua.
“Not only is this a testament to our technology partner Daihatsu’s confidence in our abilities. It also allows the car to be tailored to suit the needs and wants that are unique to Malaysians,” he added. Unfortunately, the car is not being shown to the public yet, although one can get a sneak preview of it at the Malaysia Autoshow at MAEPS in Serdang from November 9-12.
While the exact specifications have not been released, Perodua handed out a leaflet highlighting the new Myvi’s top features. What we know is that the new car is longer and wider, but lower than its high-roofed predecessor. Perodua also claims a 973 mm tandem distance (distance between the front and rear passengers) and an ‘8+1 flexible seating arrangement’ (nine layouts, not seats).
Five variants are on offer, and they are the 1.3 Standard G (MT), 1.3 Standard G (AT), 1.3 Premium X, 1.5 High and 1.5 Advance. The 1.3L and 1.5L engines offered are from the Toyota/Daihatsu NR family, with DOHC and Dual VVT-i. Base five-speed manual variant aside, all Myvis get a four-speed automatic gearbox.
It’s exactly the same engine line-up as the Toyota Avanza and not a carry-over from the previous Myvi. The 1.3L 1NR-VE is also same unit used in the Bezza 1.3L, and in the sedan it makes 94 hp at 6,000 rpm and 121 Nm of torque at 4,000 rpm. The 1.5L 2NR-VE makes 105 PS at 6,000 rpm and 136 Nm of torque at 4,200 rpm in the Avanza. The 1.5L NR engine also powers the Toyota Vios.
Eco Idle auto start-stop, which made its debut in the Bezza, is available on 1.3 Premium X and above variants. Along with aerodynamic improvements, the new Myvi’s fuel economy is as good as 20.1 km/l for the 1.5L auto. The claimed FC for the outgoing Myvi 1.5L AT is 15.4 km/l.
Now to the features. All variants get LED headlamps with a ‘Follow Me Home’ function, keyless entry with push start (unlike some premium German cars!), 60:40 split folding rear seats and reverse sensors. 1.3L variants get four airbags (front and side) ABS, EBD and Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) as standard. They roll on 14-inch wheels. As mentioned, Eco Idle is available from the 1.3 Premium X.
Moving up to the 1.5L variants nets one 15-inch rims, front and side skirting, two-tone rear bumper, a rear spoiler and an integrated Touch n Go reader (insert you TnG card into the car and use Smart Tag lanes without the Smart Tag). Both 1.5L variants get six airbags – front, side and curtain.
The range-topping 1.5 Advance gets the big surprise – Advance Safety Assist (ASA). This is a suite of safety features that includes Pre-Collision Warning, Pre-Collision Braking, Front Departure Alert and Pedal Misoperation Control.
These are existing Daihatsu systems and they operate through a forward-facing camera on the top of the windscreen. PCW warns you when a collision is about to happen, PCB is autonomous emergency braking, while FDA alerts you when the car in front has moved on (in a traffic jam), saving you from being honked by the car behind. PMC detects an obstruction in front, and will not allow the car to accelerate. Needless to say, Perodua is targeting a five-star rating from ASEAN NCAP.
Not bad for a RM55,300 car, no? That’s the price of the 1.5 Advance with ASA. The new Myvi range starts from RM44,300 for the 1.3 Standard G (MT), rising to RM46,300 for the 1.3 Standard G (AT), RM48,300 for the 1.3 Premium X and RM51,800 for the 1.5 High. All prices are on-the-road excluding insurance. Gear Up accessories, including the just-introduced child seats, are available – see the list below.
Six colours are available, and they are Lava Red, Mystical Purple, Glittering Silver, Ivory White, Granite Grey (1.5 only) and Peppermint Green (1.3 only). The latter two are new colours. Here’s the spec summary, in point form.

How fast can Geely counter attack? ALL Geely models are LEFT Hand Drive. Even this Boyue conversion to our Right Hand Drive will take at least 1 year.
That means P2 Myvi will have at the minimum 1 year to sell kau kau, cornering the market for this segment. Those that wants to change cars would definitely buy this new Myvi. That’s the crucial target consumers any new products wish to sell to. So by the time Geely comes out with P1 version 1 year later, the core buyers would already have bought the new Myvi.
Only until Geely has a firm foothold in P1 and Malaysia, will they be in a better position to counter properly & speedily.

The market favours the best model, and currently, the winners are most Honda and Perodua models. I have faith if Geely gets their way, they will stop at nothing to get what they want : the no.1 position. Be reminded, China’s market is far more competitive than Malaysia, yet Geely is not only surviving, but thriving very well, currently 343rd in Fortune 500 list.
They are IIANM the only China car manufacturer doing well today with no state interest, driven primarily by the entrepreneurial founder, Mr Li Shufu.
The cold hard fact is our country is very strategically important to Geely and Volvo in their quest to further expand their global position. Name call bn all u like, but the fact is their policies are China-friendly. There is every reason to believe they will get an unfair advantage to get things done their way, and they will capitalise hard on it. Already, many are criticizing about how cheap Geely bought Proton yet immediately get over rm1bil of R&D grant owed. Deal with it, they are here to do business, and they are in it to win it.
We’ve seen how China phone brands disrupt the market with high spec yet low price tag, they don’t mind making losses to capture market share first, then slowly move up the market and price as well eg Huawei, OnePlus, Xiaomi etc. We might just be able to see a repeat of this pattern again, and Proton stands to benefit greatly from this.
Today is your day, Perodua, bravo and congratulations. But never underestimate Proton and the might of Geely.

Sold first edition 1.0 manual myvi many years back and upgraded to bigger car. Good car for 5yrs more than 90km without any issue. Will consider this new model again for sure. Good job P2!!

I had some inside info & pics. Clearly its not based on Passo/Boon platform.
1. The rear hatch slope is a bit angled (hint Jazz).
2. The wheelbase is quite the same as the Jazz.
3. The roofline design is very sleek.
Probably this new Myvi is built using the new DNGA (Daihatsu New Global Architecture) platform? Looks promising. Proton better get their Iriz updated with AEB tech, or else…

Congrats to Perodua on their latest baby ! The new D20N Myvi is the most mature and sophisticated Myvi to date. It’s a worthy successor to the outgoing M600 Myvi. My only criticism at this stage is the ancient (but likely well-refined) 4-spd auto.
Surprisingly, Perodua chose not to drop either the 1.3 or 1.5 engine to minimise price overlapping with the Bezza. One could speculate that the new Myvi likely offers a level of refinement, sophistication and perceived quality that is considerably higher than that of the Bezza / Axia duo.
In other words, the Myvi may be positioned as a ‘premium’ Perodua hatchback, as opposed to an ‘extra-large Axia’. The Axia and D20N Myvi might have a similar internal relationship as the new Saga and new Persona. If you’ve been inside both models, you’ll know what I mean; Both are similar, but the new Saga feels more budget and slightly outdated, while the new Persona feels more premium and modern.
For the above reason, I believe that for the 2018 year, the new Myvi will regain the title of ‘No.1 best-selling car in Malaysia’ from its little sister (Axia). (The Axia has been no.1 from 2015 to 2017. Myvi has been no.1 from 2006 to 2014.)
Saving the most significant details for last; I believe it’s now safe to claim, beyond reasonable doubt, that Perodua has well and truly recognised safety as a key USP. Their actions have spoken far louder than their marketing talk.
For the first time, we have a Perodua with ESC (VSC) as standard on every spec. For the first time, we have a Perodua with side and curtain airbags. And most surprising of all, for the first time, we have a Perodua with autonomous safety features !
For this class of car (B-hatch), in this price segment (<RM100k), autonomous safety features were unheard of in our Malaysian market… until now. Many larger and more expensive cars, from more established companies STILL do not offer autonomous safety features in our market. Even some luxury cars are not spared !
The fact that Perodua included ESC, four/six airbags and autonomous safety features in the D20N Myvi is a direct response to the Iriz's own commendable safety features.
For 12 years, the Myvi did not have ESC, not even for the top spec models (even though its Daihatsu sister already had ESC in Japan). When the Iriz launched in 2014, it massively outclassed the M600 Myvi in terms of safety. For 3 years, the Iriz held a comfortable USP advantage in that respect.
However, in one felt swoop, the D20N Myvi will now have all the safety features of the Iriz, and then some (except HPF, Perodua doesn't use hot pressing). The tables have completely turned, now it is Perodua which has the USP advantage.
This is a classic example of competition in business. Competition brings the best out of every company. Some businesses win, others lose, but in almost all instances, the CONSUMERS ALWAYS WIN.
Today, we have more choices than ever in terms of 5-star NCAP safety rated cars. Just 5 to 10 years ago, this was not the case !
But wait a minute, I know I haven't addressed the elephant in the room; is this the end of the line for the Iriz ? Well, that will depend on how Proton responds with the Iriz facelift (the recently updated Iriz is not a facelift, rather a 'minor change' update).
Some of us may recall that Proton already demonstrated a special Iriz ADAS prototype in 2014. And indeed, the Iriz ADAS has similar autonomous safety features as the D20N Myvi's ASA. However, Proton chose not to commercialise the Iriz's ADAS at the time, because they were concerned that the high cost at that time would have pushed Iriz prices above the M600 Myvi's.
Almost 4 years have passed since, and technology gets cheaper each year. It looks like Perodua has found a cost-effective way to implement autonomous safety features on their top spec Myvi 1.5. It is only a matter of time until Proton does the same with the Iriz. I'm sure Geely already has such plans in the works.
Anyway, congrats to Perodua once more on the new third gen Myvi. It is my hope that with this latest model, Perodua will consider resuming Myvi exports to the U.K.. Perodua did it before, so surely, they can do it again right ?

Its going to be very difficult for Proton. Previously the Myvi had two USPs: reliable and fuel efficient. It has a smaller footprint and lighter than the Iriz, but feels a bit more spacious. Now this new Myvi scores high in safety, spaciousness (97cm tandem distance, just 4cm shy of Nissan Almera) and looks (aerodynamic sloping roofline). Not to mention its vastly improved FC.
The only things that probably give advantage to Iriz yet remain to be seen on the new Myvi:
1. Ride comfort (previous Myvi has pretty bad suspension feel)
2. Handling (Bezza & Axia steering has numb feedback, lack of grip & unstable at high speed).
3. Refinement (NVH levels below par: engine noise, rattling components, wind noise, tyre roar)
Last 2 years was awesome years for Proton, now it’s the showtime for P2
