It’s like a non-stop train now, stuff emerging about the new 2019 Mercedes-Benz G-Class, which is set to make its debut next week. In quick succession, we’ve had a homage video, the release of off-road tech details and now, official exterior images have come about, the leak revealed via Dutch site Autoweek.nl.
The images show a familiar form, even if the general edges have been softened somewhat in the new depiction. New headlights, front grille and bumpers find their way on, but on the whole the Gelandewagen has retained most of its looks, which should please the aficionados.
Inside is where large changes have come about, as revealed from the interior images released last month. Aside from more legroom, modernisation has brought about more luxurious appointments as well as new tech, which includes two 12.3-inch digital displays making up the instrument panel and central screen, though traditionalists can still go the analogue route for the instrumentation.
While the new offering remains a true G-Wagen, thanks to its ladder-type frame configuration, three 100% differential locks and a low-range off-road ratio, significant engineering has made it a more effective off-road performer than the old one.
Besides improved ground clearance between the axles and better fording depth compared to the old G-Class, there’s a new transfer case, which is flange-mounted directly on to the transmission, as well as a G-Mode off-road drive programme, which tailors the steering, accelerator pedal and adjustable damping of the chassis to ensure maximum off-road capability.
It hasn’t been revealed, but the G-Class is expected to feature the same 4.0 litre biturbo V8 as seen in the G 500 facelift from 2015. The transmission, however, has been confirmed – a 9G-Tronic automatic transmission with torque converter specifically adapted for the G-Class, with dedicated software mapping helping to reduce shift and response times.
