Geely Luo You Engine Company, a subsidiary of Geely Auto Holding, is to establish a new joint venture with Aisin for the production of six-speed automatic gearboxes, parts and sales. The initial plan is to produce 400,000 units per year.
Under the agreement framework, the JV will have a registered capital of US$117 million, with the transmission specialist injecting US$70 million for a 60% share. Geely will invest US$46.80 million for the remaining 40% stake.
With the launch of Geely’s ‘2020 Strategy’ and ‘Blue Geely Initiative’ core strategies, the Chinese carmaker is seeing greater need for automatic transmissions that offer six gears or more, with its own capacity for gearbox production not being able to keep up with demand. The JV with Aisin will lower purchasing costs and raise efficiency, Geely says.
“By establishing this new joint venture with Aisin we will be able to raise Geely’s core competencies in powertrain development and production, and accelerate our 2020 Strategy and Blue Geely Initiative. From today both parties will be able to work together on technology development and application to create a long term strategic partnership,” said Geely Auto Group president and CEO, An Conghui.
An was speaking at the 2018 Beijing International Auto Show, where the Hangzhou-based carmaker revealed the Concept Icon SUV and hybrid versions of its Bo Rui flagship sedan.

Yay no more tumbuk cvt for potong
Banzai Toyota Aisin!!!
facelift Iriz alredi got remap Punch CVT for better performance.
Aisin still not the best gearbox compare to ZF transmussion
no need for Toyota to bansai as there is always available toilets for Toyota to be flush out with their dinosaur technogies ..
Can Proton have Aisin’s 6 speed auto for their next gen Iriz and Saga planned for launch in 2021.
If Geely is willing to offer Proton the full spec Boyue with all the advanced features then a gearbox is no big ask at all.
Aisin also make good CVTs, like the one in the Vios and Altis.
Aisin also make good 6 speeders, like the one in the Volvos.
Volvo’s Drive-E powertrain uses 8-speed Aisin gearbox.
Toyota Aisin gearbox. Tak payah pening, Tak payah fikir
Protong should have tapped into Aisin donkey years ago…but with ancient campro engine..oso can’t make much difference.
They just revived the Preve. Now even more dinosaur and ancient Campro.
Coz it is till drive better than sampan handling new sushi cars
Good move by Geely to have a partner that specialises in gearbox. Many doesn’t know that the gearbox is the most expensive component in a car bar the CVTs, which is actually a cut price type of gearbox compared to the general gearboxes out there. So hope Geely sticks with the 6 speeders or better still 8 speeders.
Good venture with Aisin, the best torque converter automatic transmission manufacturer in the world, aside the ZF.
China’s automotive engineering R&D capacity is growing at an unbelievable pace, a good look at their latest domestic offers simply was an eye opening of what they are capable of now. By partnering with Aisin, Geely can cut down the learning curve route and gain much valuable expertises in making gearboxes.
However, manufacturering gearbbox (hardware) is one thing, pairing it with the engine (software) to make up a smooth and impeccable powertrain to drive, with rock solid reliability is another thing altogether, which the Japanese had mastered it to an perfect art form. Proton’s previous awful tuning of the Punch CVT is a testimony of how powertrain tunning is essential, an achilles heel that drives many potential buyers away because of that much to be desired-PunchCVT-Campro combo, a problem only being rectified until the introduction of new Persona and Iriz MC.
The Iriz/Persona platform (p2-30A) is still new and has many talent in it that are left untapped (not to be forgotten it is design from the start to accommodate hybrid powertrain). A next generation of the current chassis with Geely’s refinement expertises and powertrain, match Aisin automatics will be a very good car to drive and serve the market well into the mid 2020’s.
Boom!
Looking forward to a Proton with 6 speed auto!
I still prefer Punch CVT. Heard it got more ‘Punch’
