The transport ministry has announced that the fare for the Sunway Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) service will be reduced by 20% starting from December 1, Bernama reports. Transport minister Anthony Loke said the initiative is aiming to encourage more people to use the service and reward loyalty.
“The 20% discount is for passengers who pay using cash and a cashless payment system, which are the payment modes used 75% of the time based on October 2018 statistics,” Loke said. Following the price revision, he said that the fare for the furthest stop will be RM4.30 compared to RM5.40 currently, a reduction of RM1.10. With the fare reduction, Prasarana Malaysia is targeting a 22% increase in ridership.
The BRT Sunway Line has recorded a passenger load exceeding 11,000 riders per day during the week, and serves more than 250,000 commuters per month. Launched in June 2015, the service plies a 5.4 km-long route and covers a total of seven stations.
The stations on the route are Setia Jaya, Mentari Business Park, Sunway Lagoon, Sunway Medical Centre, Monash University Malaysia, South Quay/USJ 1 and USJ 7. The line also features a total of 1,153 parking bays, including 102 bays for female drivers and 23 for disabled commuters, as well as 121 motorcycle parking bays.
