The European New Car Assessment Programme (Euro NCAP) has released the test results of its latest vehicle crash test set, and seven out of the nine vehicles tested have obtained the maximum five-star rating. Two models, however, performed very poorly – the new Jeep Wrangler managed only a one-star rating, while the Fiat Panda didn’t even manage a star.
The aging Panda, which was last tested by Euro NCAP seven years ago, shows how far behind it has fallen. It scored 45% in the adult occupant protection (AOP) category, 47% for pedestrian protection (VRU) but only 16% for child occupant protection (COP).
As for safety assist, it managed to only score one point, or 7% of the total, its only feature to score points being a seatbelt reminder. The vehicle’s abysmal zero-star rating matches that achieved by its stablemate, the Punto, back in 2017.
It has at least age to hide behind. The Jeep Wrangler is an all-new vehicle, a fresh introduction this year.
As tested in its Sahara four-dour Unlimited variant form, the Wrangler managed a score of 50% for AOP, 69% for COP and 49% for VRU, but only 32% in the safety assist category.
Armed with a seatbelt reminder and a simple driver-set speed limiter, but no other form of driver-assistance systems, the vehicle is by current overall test standards only up to a one-star rating. Euro NCAP’s secretary general Michiel van Ratingen said it was truly disappointing to see a brand-new car being put on sale in 2018 with no autonomous braking system and no lane assistance.
The rest of the field was made up of the Audi Q3, BMW X5, Hyundai Santa Fe, Jaguar I-Pace, Peugeot 508, Volvo S60 and V60, all of which were five-star rated.
Not all cleared the posts without issue. Tests on the Santa Fe highlighted an issue where the side curtain airbags of cars equipped with a panoramic roof could be torn during deployment. Hyundai has already changed the airbag fixings in production, and early cars will be subject to an official recall.
Elsewhere, the driver knee airbag in the new BMW X5 was found to not deploy correctly in the frontal offset test, similar to that seen with the 5 Series when it was tested last year. Because of this, the unit provided little additional protection to the driver’s legs.
The remaining five were praised by Euro NCAP. “To be fair, the Audi Q3, Jaguar I-Pace, Peugeot 508 and Volvo V60/S60 have set the standard against which others are judged this time, and other manufacturers could do well to follow their example. The I-Pace, especially, demonstrates that future vehicles will be good for the environment but also provide high levels of safety,” he said.
Looking to sell your car? Sell it with Carro.
Poor Malaysian Proton buyers. Always get the low spec Protons for their own rakyat.
Protons in overseas are all so high spec. Export Protons all have much more airbags and safety features.
Kasihan Proton owners in Malaysia. Mat Salleh and Arabs always get 10X more safety features than Malaysians in Malaysia do
Kasihan basher still living in the past. He thinks its still the 90s.
I just drove a Proton last year in the UK. It was 100X better than our Malaysian versions. This was 2017.
What 90s you talking about?
Who cares if you drove a Proton in Ulu Kelang. I can find plenty of nice Protons in UK as well.
It depends on owners to maintain the car. If you treat it poorly, of course it will give you a bad impression. But the bad impression reflects on the said owner and not the car brand itself.
Wait! Why r u replying on behalf of John Teh, unless ur … uh oh, looks like u kantoied urself for using a dupe again. lolz!
What? Oh yeah, now that you mentioned it. The way he wrote it is exactly like that troll. Maximum kantoi himself! No shame!

Proton Preve got 5 stars but sales kaput ie masuk jamban.
Iriz also 5 stars but sales masuk jamban
Pipu buy P2 coz it is cheap not because it is good
Actually I owned many Fiats. They were good cars. But sad it was run by lazy lazy lazy people of Torino Motors before. This is why the brand died. But it was a great brand
Torino same like Naza….same type always sleeping 24 hrs and asking for bantuan all the time
VolvoCar, Mesidis, Geely, P1, VolvoTrucks, Lotus > all
Volvo still can sell. But P1 cars still cannot sell. How?
Btw, X70 is not P1, it is fully Geely and China owned and China made.
12,000 cannot sell? Thats 3 months of ur entire Toyota sales just to keep up with 1 P1 model. And nobody said X70 was not originated from Geely. Everyone knew that but u seem to suddenly find out about this. Stop sleeping and info will come faster to u.
You’ve made a mistake!
VolvoCar, Mesidis, Geely, P1, VolvoTrucks, Lotus < all
That is the correct answer!
if it’s called Fiat Gorilla, it will get 5 stars.
The Jeep Wrangler is a freakin off roader for god’s sake. It has no off road use for autonomous braking system and lane assistance!!!
Could you imagine if it has all the safety features and it all went nuts when you’re going off road lol…
