2018 another record sales year for BMW Motorrad – 1,130 new BMW motorcycles sold in Malaysia

2018 was another banner year for BMW Motorrad, with worldwide sales increasing by 0.9%. This marks the eighth year running BMW Motorrad has recorded a sales increase, with 165,566 motorcycles and scooters delivered, from the previous year’s total of 164,153 units.

For 2020, BMW Motorrad intends to break the 200,000 barrier, said Dr Markus Schramm, head of BMW Motorrad. “The 2018 sales figure shows that our motorcycle growth strategy is taking effect. This success was achieved due to the market launch of six new models as well as the powerful BMW Motorrad product portfolio. And we still have a great deal planned for the coming years,” said Schramm.

This includes a new BMW Motorrad WorldSBK team for 2019, competing in the FIM World Superbike Championship with the 2019 S 1000 RR. Germany was the largest single market for Motorrad, with 23,824 units, followed by France with 16,615 units and Italy with 14,110 units.

For Asia, China led the way with 7,561 units sold, an increase of 35% from previous, along with India, recording 2,187 units in 2018. In Malaysia, BMW Motorrad sold 1,130 units in 2018, a 7% increase from 2017, of which 300 units were the R 1200 GS Adventure.

Worldwide, BMW Motorrad sold more than 51,000 R 1200 GS/GS Adventure, from a total of 84,000 R-series bikes. For the sub-500 cc market segment, 24,363 units of the G 310 R and G 310 GS were delivered in 2018, representing 14.84% of total worldwide motorcycle sales for Motorrad.
