Proton X70 group completes 13k km M’sia-China trip

On 26 February, nine units of the Proton X70 departed Proton’s Centre of Excellence (CoE) on an overland journey to China. Organised by Borneo Automobile Leisure Touring and Kunming Scenery-Customer International Travel Co, supported by Proton, the Proton X70 Malaysia-China Amazing Trip 2019 covered more than 13,000 km in 33 days over four countries. The group has reach home safely.

If the trip was to prove the X70’s reliability, then it passed with flying colours. There were no breakdowns reported and all nine SUVs completed the route without requiring any repairs except for scheduled servicing.

The participants praised the “enthusiastic performance and refined cabin” of the X70, which made long days behind the wheel effortless, the group claimed. Those in the X70 Premium further enjoyed the Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) and features such as Nappa leather seats.

“We were already impressed by the high levels of comfort and refinement the Proton X70 has and after spending 33 days driving over 13,000 km on unpredictable roads, I am convinced this is one of the best choices in its class,” said Datuk Wong Kean Hwee, an Amazing Trip 2019 participant.

“An epic journey to China offers the chance to experience many different cultures along the way. Choosing the wrong vehicle for the trip however can make it seem very long and tiring so I am delighted with how the Proton X70 performed. It was reliable, comfortable and refined, which means it will be a pleasure to drive on a daily basis,” added Lim Mee.

As the Proton X70 is not yet sold outside of Malaysia, technical assistance was arranged by Proton at dealer locations and service centres along the route, where possible. In China, servicing and support was provided by Geely dealers, who are of course already familiar with the Boyue SUV that the X70 is based on.

Event director Dr Ling Tung King said: “Through this Amazing Trip 2019, we built strong bonds not only with the Proton X70 owners, but also with Proton. With this, I would like to thank Proton for their support as this shows that Proton really cares for its customers.”

While the trip went through Malaysia, Thailand and Laos, the majority of time was spent in China where the convoy travelled through various regions before reaching the halfway point at Hangzhou, where the convoy turned back for Malaysia. Hangzhou is of course Geely’s home city, and the group visited the carmaker’s HQ and toured the Geely Experience Centre.

According to Proton, participants had the chance to learn more about its JV partner, its carmaking history and also got a sneak peak at models that could potentially be future Protons.

“While Proton is proud of its own capabilities, we are also happy to share more information about our joint venture partner, Geely, with the participants of the Amazing Trip 2019. We want as many Malaysians as possible to gain an understanding of the relationship between the two companies so that more people will understand about the exciting future for Proton,” said Dr Li Chunrong, CEO of Proton.

The X70 is a rebadged job. There’s nothing for Malaysian or Proton to be proud of. Stop trumpeting the car like it’s a game changer or the pride of the nation

    • You are the sohai! Paultan is a Malaysian automotive site. X70 is a Proton, a Malaysian carmaker. By default, PT will cover the story. If follow your logic all rebadged cars shouldn’t be mentioned here, all Perodua cars should be banned right? BTW, nowhere in the article did PT glorify the X70.

To be fair, the axia, bezza, and aruz went through more changes from their borrowed siblings, compared to boyue; changing the front grille only, and ertiga; changing the badge only.

Change of interior is more challenging than just a reskinning like Axia, Bezza, and Aruz.

you conveniently forgot about the 500 engineers sent to China who were involved in the right hand drive conversion process. such is your eagerness to disparage the efforts of our fellow malaysians that you would slander them, relegating their hardwork to just ‘changing the front grill only’ with out taking into account of what lies under the (metal) skin.
          pathetic.

        • So, you would gladly accept if they say “The X70 was such a lousy and uncomfortable car”? Tell you what: Go have a test drive of the X70 and the CRV. Compare the two in terms of comfort and refinement, since this seems like the sore point for you. If that’s too much hassle for you, continue being your namesake then.

When PT requested to input “Your Name” before you can comment, you already named yourself as “SOHHAI” .. so sad for you but obviously your contribution here suits your name. X70 is every Malaysian’s pride .. go to the nearest Proton showroom to request for a test drive with your family(if you ever have one) then come back to comment

    • Lolz! Rebadge or not, it travels 13k km across mostly rough roads without any of them breakdown. This is something to be proud of from engineering point and oso since this is China car. Nobody says its pride of the nation only delusional basher like u dream that, but game changer at 25k bookings despite 8k delivered? Yup, its not a game changer, its a market changer indeed.

At this point, any badge engineered cars doesn’t look bad compared to some big time German company(Figure it out on your own.) which all they is took an existing Japanese pickup truck and sold it for probably 2 or 3 times the price.

Perodua this whole time for some reason received a lot of criticism from people because “uH C0pY t0YoTA pl4TfORm”. Which is kinda stupid since badge engineering is a totally normal thing in the car industry for many years. Meanwhile the X70 on the other hand has received a lot of praise. If that German pickup truck can’t make Perodua haters shut up, I don’t know what else will.

      • Well, in the case of Proton it’s like being caught between a rock and a hard place. Cars developed by itself were criticised for bring uncompetitive and losing sales. Now, when rebadging a somewhat competitive X70 also being criticised for return to rebadging despite seeing increase in sales. What Proton should do?
