Bentley has dropped yet another teaser of the Flying Spur ahead of its June 11 debut, only this time in video format while at the same time revealing some of the car’s key features. For instance, the Flying Spur will get all-wheel steering, which is a first for the British automaker.
All-wheel steering is not a new tech per se – it’s used to improve agility on performance cars, and help “shorten” the turning radius (among other benefits) for lengthy cars or limousines. For the Flying Spur, all-wheel steering will provide additional high-speed stability by tilting the rear wheels in the same direction as the front. At low speeds, the rear wheels turn in the opposite direction as the front, giving low speed agility.
All-wheel drive is standard, but for the first time drive is predominantly routed to the rear wheels. This offers classic sports sedan handling characteristics. If slip is detected, the system immediately sends drive to the front wheels for optimal traction.
Inside, the third-generation luxury sedan will feature what it calls an automotive world-first, which is a three-dimensional, textured leather upholstery. Apparently, these are just some of many new, advanced features and technologies that Bentley will introduce with the new Flying Spur.
We already know that the Flying Spur will sit on an extended version of the MSB platform (shared with the Continental GT). This allows the luxury sedan to get the 48 volt mild-hybrid electrical system, and also means that much of the tech that’s on the Conti GT will be carried over. Bentley also said the new car will offer segment-defining levels of performance, refinement, as well as offer an unparalleled touring experience for driver and passengers.
For engines, the Flying Spur should be offered with a 6.0 litre twin-turbo W12 engine that is also used in the Continental GT and Bentayga. A slightly less powerful V8 petrol will also be available, as well as a 3.0 litre plug-in hybrid V6 petrol that is shared with the Bentayga and Porsche Panamera 4 E-Hybrid.
Bentley Dynamic Ride is designed to further improve both handling and ride comfort. New to the Flying Spur, the innovative system changes suspension stiffness on demand to combat cornering forces and minimise body roll that might otherwise disturb occupants.
