National car production boosts skilled manpower – PM

The production of national cars not only aims to expand the country’s manufacturing industry, but also represents a way to train workers in the automotive sector and grow the skilled workforce, prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad said at the dialogue session with Educational and Technical and Vocational Training Conference (TVET) held yesterday, Bernama reported.

“Now we know how to make a car and when we (came to) know how to design and produce cars, we also learnt on the engineering involved. We have learnt many things out of just one industry,” he said in response to a question by the Institute of Automotive, Robotic and Internet of Things Malaysia (MARii) CEO Datuk Madani Sahari.

Madani’s question was regarding TVET as an effective method in closing the gap between workers’ skills and the needs of the industry. “Now we not only (produce) cars but we oversee the engine or robot that (produce) the cars, so how we supervise these machines is also a skill needed to manufacture cars in this era,” Tun Mahathir said.

Players in the automotive industry must always enhance their capacities in line with the sophistication of current vehicle technologies, Tun Mahathir said, adding that the manufacture of cars currently are far more complex than that of the first national car, the Proton Saga.

Tun Mahathir noted that other industries such as aerospace also required many skilled workers as they were among the biggest industries producing components in Malaysia, with the country producing aircraft components for Airbus and Boeing, the report said.

“I am confident that Malaysians are no less qualified than the other nationalities, the question is whether they want it or not. If we don’t want to learn, we will be left behind,” the prime minister said.

We must be proud of Perodua. Every year, Perodua sales are always 4X or 5X higher than our first game over national carmaker. Now Perodua are going international while Proton unfortunately already game over in International market.

Untill today cannot produce indigenous platform design. On the other hand, P1 has built it own platforms, some good enough for rally/racing, good enough for CUSCO to sell a rally car based on the Neo for privateers, good enough for Team PSP to run wajas in BTC, good enough for Welch Motorsports to field two 400 bhp Personas in the BTCC, good enough for Mellors Elliot Motorsports to field the Neo S2000 and now the Iriz.

Sure there were no local drivers and the machines were built by mat sallehs and jippun lang- but that’s the point, they could’ve pick a plaform from a plethora of other established manufacturers but instead they chose P1.

They may not sell that well compared to P2, P1 chassis engineers knows their sh!t.

Bezza is based off Etios, Axia is based off Mira, And Myvi is based off Boon.

          What indigenous platform, genius?

Tun, please divulge how much Gov Grant had been given to P1 since 1981. We, Rakyat has right to know how much already been pumped into P1 to kept it afloat yet, train engineer and manager yet still are losing money. Will PAC open an investigation? or MACC or need a RCI?

Proton is no more our national car.In 2 more years, all the campro powered protons will be history.
Geely would have brought in their right handed versions of sedans and suvs and mpvs to flood the SE Asian market.
It is actually GEELY MALAYSIA BERHAD.,with a camouflaged tiger logo.

    • At least we get 49 percent from the company…why so ashamed wt rebadge car?everyone doing it…in the end the factory is still in malaysia…gov can collect tax…people can work there….its better than proton being bankrupt….

  • One (P1) is more than enuff to boost skilled manpower, two (P2) and more (P3) is just crowding the space and cannibalising resources in such a small country. Can alredi see the hundreds of k workers in the automotive industry thanks to P1. If he wants to boost that higher, better let Geely expand P1 factory or even welcome them to make new one and kolos the other national car that is just rebadging rejected dinosars since Day One. All of them r just eating resources and manpower that can better be used by P1 to make gud cars and not rejects for 3rd world countries.

I guess it is creating skilled-manpower of rebadging car emblem… One and only in the world.
