EICMA 2019: BMW Motorrad F900XR, F900R debut

Despite already having the recently released adventure-sports four-cylinder S1000XR in the catalogue, BMW Motorrad has also released another motorcycle in the same vein, the 2020 BMW Motorrad F900XR adventure-sports at the EICMA 2019 show. It is accompanied by a variant in the ‘F’-series motorcycle, the F900R naked sports which replaces the F800R.

Both the F900XR and F900R use the same engine, a 895 cc parallel-twin, basically the same engine from the 853 cc F850GS. The bored out mill is capable of producing 105 hp at 8,750 rpm and 92 Nm of torque at 6,500 rpm, matched to a six-speed gearbox with two ride modes – Rain or Road.

Should this be deemed insufficient, the optional Riding Mode Pro module gives two more user selectable ride modes as well as Dynamic Traction Control (DTC), ABS Pro, Dynamic Brake Control (DBC) and Engine Drag Torque Control (MSR) which helps prevent rear wheel hop under hard downshifting.

Despite having many things in common, the F900XR and F900R have very different characters where the XR is more for sports-touring while the R is a naked street bike. The F900XR comes with a more upright seating position as well as bodywork designed to provide aerodynamic comfort over long distances including an adjustable windshield.

Meanwhile, the F900R comes with a minimum of bodywork and a very much slimmer tail section. Both carry a plastic fuel tank to save weight, with a capacity of 13-litres for the F900R and 15.5-litres for the F900XR.

Suspension is also different between the ‘R’ and ‘XR’ versions of the F900 with the F900XR using upside-down forks giving 170 mm of travel in front and a monoshock with 172 mm of travel while the F900R gets 135 mm and 142 mm of suspension travel front and rear, respectively. While suspension for both ‘F’ series motorcycles is non-adjustable, adding the option Dynamic ESA electronic suspension provides semi-active suspension.

Other standard equipment on both F900 bikes is LED lighting all round, full-colour TFT-LCD screen with BMW Connectivity and brakes by Brembo with ASC and two-channel ABS. Optional extras include Adaptive Cornering Light, Keyless Ride, Shift Assistant Pro, Intelligent Emergency Call, ABS Pro dan Intelligent Emergency Call (Europe only).

As usual, BMW Motorrad provides an extensive range of accessories for the F900XR and F900R including low seat, luggage and others. The 2020 BMW Motorrad F900R is offered in Blackstorm Metallic, San Marino Blue Metallic dan Hockenheim Silver Metallic/Racing Red while the F900XR comes in Light White, Galvanic Gold and Racing Red.
