Is GT-R the “most legend” badge in the car world? If not an outright yes, it surely must be right up there among the most iconic names. The GT-R is 50 years old this year, and Nissan made the GT-R 50th Anniversary Edition to commemorate the milestone. The car made its debut at this year’s New York International Auto Show, and Nissan Thailand has brought one to the ongoing 2019 Thai Motor Expo.
The special edition is available in three two-tone exterior colour schemes, each meant to represent the GT-R’s liveries from the Japan GP Series. The first two – Pearl White with red stripes and Super Silver with white stripes – are rather “normal”, and Nissan did little to explain them.
What you (and I) really want is this, the the return of Bayside (Wangan) Blue used on the R34 model. To ensure a vivid shade of blue is presetned with striking highlights and deep shadows, a four-coat, double-heat treatment process was used. This was complemented with white racing stripes, along with blue accents on the spokes of the 20-inch wheels.
The words “50th Anniversary” are proudly emblazoned at the back via a white decal, and there’s a special metal emblem below the famous GT-R mark.
On the inside, a grey interior colour scheme is applied instead, with unique steering wheel and shift knob trim, special embossed seats, an Alcantara headliner with unique stitching, Alcantara-wrapped sunvisors and a dedicated plaque on the centre console. It’s quite a unique colour combo, making the 50th truly special.
Beyond the aesthetic specials, the GT-R’s 3.8 litre turbocharged V6 remains as it is, serving up 565 hp and 633 Nm of torque. A six-speed dual-clutch transmission, all-wheel drive and electronically controlled suspension are all standard. The VR38DETT engine is hand assembled at Nissan’s Tochigi facility by a special team of engineers, who leave their name on it – the unit you see here was finished by a takumi named Izumi Shioya.
One can try to be clever by playing with hyphens, but who are you trying to kid? There’s only one GT-R.

Don’t get me wrong, the GTR is an iconic and superb car that Nissan has produced. However, after so many years, I believe it is time to unveil a new one instead of making limitless editions. But kudos to team, after so many years the GTR still looks great with the performance to beat newer cars.
When will they stop production of this R35, is way overdue for the replacement.
