MINI The Coopers Edition in Malaysia – special tribute model based on the Cooper S 5 Door; from RM274k

MINI Malaysia has introduced a special variant of the MINI 5 Door called The Coopers Edition, which pays tribute to the Cooper family that has been associated with the brand for over 60 years. Fans of the brand will undoubtedly know John Cooper, the legendary race car designer whose Mini Cooper S, driven by Patrick “Paddy” Hopkirk and co-driver Henry Liddon, won the Monte Carlo Rally in 1964.

The Coopers Edition is available in two colour options – Enigmatic Black and Rooftop Grey – both priced at RM274,495.05 on-the-road without insurance. Do note that the price factors in the ongoing sales tax exemption (50% as this is a CBU model) and includes a two-year, unlimited mileage warranty. To get a four-year, unlimited mileage warranty with free scheduled service, the price goes up to RM283,255.05

Compared to a regular Cooper S 5 Door, The Coopers Edition is nearly RM14k extra, so what do you get for paying the premium? Not much if you look under the bonnet, as it’s the same powertrain as the Cooper S, so you get a B48 2.0 litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine engine that produces 192 PS (189 hp) and 280 Nm of torque. Drive goes to the front wheels through a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, with the 0-100 km/h time being 6.8 seconds, while the top speed is 235 km/h.

However, The Coopers Edition comes with specific cues that truly make it stand out. On the exterior, the side scuttles are not only finished in gloss black, but also sport “The Coopers” script and John Cooper’s signature. Elsewhere, there are white stripes instead of black ones, along with a blue roof and 18-inch Pulse Spoke two-tone alloy wheels.

On the inside, you’ll find more reminders that you’re in the tribute model, beginning with another “The Coopers” script near the instrument cluster, while the steering wheel’s bottom spoke has the classic “Cooper” name script. Even before you get in, you’ll notice “The Coopers” on the door sills and once inside, the signatures of the Cooper family are seen on the passenger side of the cabin.

The kit list is pretty much on par with the Cooper S and includes things like a five-inch digital instrument panel, an 8.8-inch Radio MINI Visual Boost touchscreen infotainment system (with Apple CarPlay support), dual-zone climate control, Charcoal Black leatherette upholstery, Silver Chequered interior surfacing, a Nappa leather steering wheel, Comfort Access, LED headlamps, a Light Package and Ambient Light.

Same goes for safety and driver assist systems, which are the Driving Assistant with lane departure warning (operable between 70 km/h to 210 km/h), Attentive Assist, Parking Assistance, Driving Assistance with approach control warning and light city braking (AEB), DSC, traction control, six airbags and a rearview camera.

    OMG y so weak? Even the X50 could achieve 177hp & 255Nm with a puny 1.5L TGDi somemore a 3 cylinder engine.

On paper figure and real life performance maybe a lot different. Some on paper shows very good figure, but real life cannot achieve it.

They can definitely increase the HP but the engine life will be shorter. There are thousand of reasons why power is left lower than it should be. BTW, have you tried one? The combo of B48 + 7 speed DCT is awesome! Geely’s tranny is slow.

    • I can tell you that a Mini’s 189hp vs. a 330i’s 252hp feels almost the same because of the power-weight ratio. Good luck getting that thrill of acceleration in an X50.

BMW has been fleecing Malaysian customers with their expensive Mini pricing since day one but RM283k for this underpowered statement piece is really ridiculous.

In the UK, the Mini Cooper S 5 door Sports (top spec) costs £26.3k while the Golf GTi with DSG is £36.4k. 176bhp vs 241bhp… it’s not even a contest. In Malaysia, the Cooper S costs so much more than the GTi. Just cannot see the logic.

    • You cannot get a top spec mcs 5 door here in the UK for £26.3k. This price is the starting price for this model, you need to add optional extras such the Navigation Pack and Comfort Pack which will push the price to over £30k. Saying that the price in Malaysia is very high, especially when a mcs is priced at the equivalent price of roughly £50k. You could easily get the clubman or countryman JCW with all the options tick for less than £50k in the UK.
