Cars damaged by uprooted trees and flying metal debris in Penang following severe storm yesterday

Northern states have had it rough in terms of the weather this week, with Penang the latest to be affected. A severe storm that hit the island state yesterday resulted in flash floods and fallen trees, some of which toppled on parked vehicles, with at least two people killed by a tree that fell on the car they were in, according to a report by The Star.

The turbulence also wreaked havoc on parked vehicles as metal awnings and frames collapsed from the force of the strong winds and became free-flying debris, as could be seen in a clip shot during the storm by a member of the public and shared on X by #UpdateInfo.

While its impossible to determine how safe a place for parked cars is in such situations, staying inside a parked vehicle during a thunderstorm with large trees nearby should be avoided if possible. Stay safe, everyone.
