Suzuki and Toyota collaboration to yield a new small all-electric SUV – India first in 2025, then globally

Toyota and Suzuki have announced that they are set to strengthen their collaboration through the development of a small battery-electric SUV that will arrive on the scene next year.

The upcoming model is the first BEV to come about from the ongoing relationship that began in 2019 when both automakers inked a deal to form a capital alliance to collaborate in a variety of fields and technologies, including the mutual supply of vehicles.

The electric SUV will be developed by Suzuki and is scheduled to be first manufactured at the automaker’s Gujarat plant in India from the spring of 2025. From there on, it will be launched worldwide, the automakers said.

No details of the model were ventured, but the companies said that the drive unit and platform that will be used by the model were jointly developed by Suzuki, Toyota and Daihatsu. Designed exclusively as a BEV, the firms said it will feature sharp driving characteristics of a BEV, an ample cruising range and a comfortable cabin. The model will also be available with a 4WD system.

The vehicle isn’t Suzuki’s first foray into electrification, as it has been working together with Daihatsu and Toyota on EV mini-commercial vans, which were revealed last year. The SUV will however be its entry into the EV game in the passenger vehicle segment.
