Next-generation Mercedes-Benz CLA

The next-generation Mercedes-Benz CLA is set to get both internal combustion and fully electric powertrains, and in the case of the former, the upcoming four-door model is set to receive a 2.0 litre turbocharged engine developed by Horse Powertrain, a 50:50 joint venture between Geely and Renault, according to Car News China.

This powertrain is said to produce 250 hp and 360 Nm, and this will be produced in China. In relation to the current Mercedes-Benz engine that is of comparable outputs, the M260 inline-four cylinder turbo petrol that powers the A250 Sedan in Malaysia outputs 224 hp at 5,500 rpm and 350 Nm from 1,800 rpm to 4,000 rpm.

Shown last month under camouflage at the Festival d’Hyères French fashion and photography festival, the next-generation CLA is underpinned by the manufacturer’s MMA platform that supports both battery-electric and electrified internal combustion powertrains.

Car News China reported that the upcoming model will feature either mild-hybrid of fully electric powertrains, without a plug-in hybrid option. This means the 2.0 litre turbocharged engine from the Horse Powertrain joint venture will incorporate electric propulsion within its driveline.

The MMA platform of the next CLA is expected to draw from the specifications of the Concept CLA, which packs an 800-volt electrical architecture that supports DC fast charging at up to 250 kW, for a replenishment of 400 km of range in 15 minutes. A full charge brings a claimed 750 km of range, with energy consumed at a rate of 12 kWh per 100 km.

As for the fully electric version of the next CLA, the Concept CLA is specified with a 175 kW (238 PS) rear-mounted motor that incorporates a two-speed transmission, and the electric drive unit is touted to have energy efficiency of up to 93%. The production version of the upcoming CLA is expected to feature a battery of 89.6 kWh capacity, according to Car News China.

The German has given up what they do best (engine development) and outsourcing it.. So what is left for Mercedes Benz that used to pride themselves with their mechanical engineering prowess?
So now it is true that MB now stands for “More screen Better”, adding more gimmicks into their interior and charge the consumer a premium?
As I have predicted, the German and any other premium brands only have these few years to milk from their badge, after that when other car manufacturers have caught up, there will be very little to differentiate the legacy premium brand with those uprising companies from the East.
