Container falls from lorry in Bukit Mertajam, Penang; one dead, one injured, several vehicles damaged

An overturned container from a lorry has resulted in the death of one motorist near Bukit Mertajam, Penang this morning, November 13, reported The Star.

The deceased, a 21-year-old female was reportedly in their vehicle waiting at the traffic light-controlled intersection of Jalan Kebun Sireh and Jalan Bukit Tengah, when the lorry from the opposite direction was making a left turn.

As depicted in footage from a motorist’s dashcam, the lorry was taking the turn at speed, resulting in the lorry’s container falling off the trailer and colliding with several vehicles. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene, and was understood to be travelling alone in the vehicle on her way to work.

Another motorist, a 25-year-old male was injured as a result of the incident, and he was rescued by passers-by at the scene, while recovery of the body of the deceased required special tools, said Bandar Perda fire and rescue department operations commander Mohd Nor Azamuddin Abdullah to Harian Metro. Five vehicles comprised of three cars and two lorries including a trailer were involved in the incident, according to the report.
