The operating license of the trailer company involved in the fatal crash in Bukit Mertajam, Penang earlier this week will be suspended if it fails the audit or if it is found non-compliant with safety regulations, reported Bernama. The Malaysian Institute of Road Safety (MIROS) has been directed to immediately conduct a thorough investigation to determine the cause of the incident, said transport minister Anthony Loke.
“This is a tragic and regrettable event that should never have occurred. Action must be taken. The land public transport agency (APAD), together with the road transport department (JPJ) will conduct an audit of the company. If they fail or are found non-compliant with safety measures, their license will be suspended,” Loke said.
The incident occurred on the morning of Wednesday, April 13, at the traffic light-controlled intersection of Jalan Kebun Sireh and Jalan Bukit Tengah, when the deceased, Lee Zi Rou was driving alone in her car, waiting in line.
Approaching from the opposite direction, the trailer lorry turned left towards the lane adjacent to Lee, when the container detached from the trailer, landing on Lee’s car. Lee succumbed to her injuries at the scene.
Following the incident, the lorry driver has been detained for further investigation under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, said Seberang Perai Tengah district police chief ACP Helmi Aris, reported The Star.
Looking to sell your car? Sell it with Carro.
Should have whipped the lorry driver that leaves a “V” mark for him being unremorseful.
Kek. Greedy boss can easily hires new driver.
Never mind, my V company kena Loke suspended, i registered a new X company continue operation, business as usual all asset swap from V to X, problem solved.
Such statement by the minister is not something new. It has been around and yet incidents keep happening. He should make stern decisions like charge the company directors for liabilities and sue for big amount of compensation on behalf of the victims etc. Suspend licence is not something new ya, and it never deter incidents or force companies to really look into the safety of their vehicles and drivers.
After settling each and every interested parties, the company will be back in action again.
Its not April but November 13
what is the use of 80/90kmh sticker at the back of lorry when most of them never follow the speed stated. Some lorry drivers tailgating at fastlane & middle lane, even doing zigzag to overtake other vehicles, like they r driving a hatchback. Come on enforcer, plz enforce speed limiter to the lorries. And make sure they make a mandatory self test at their company before driving out. u can learn from youtube how the japanese transport provider does.
Well said
Minister Loke – suspension is not the way fwd, you need to put the driver and the owner in Jail, then drivers and owners will be more cautious towards safety, otherwise suspend company A, owner will use Company B to operate.lets be serious about safety. Ever imagine what if the deceased is your family? Will you act differently?
The economy will siffer if nobody wants to do this business. Accidents happen. Steps must be taken to minimise its occurence. If there us dtiver shortage, then steps must be taken to recruit and train more so that those drivers with huge offences are taken out.
crime and jail is not under power of transport minister. its responsibility of police and courts to decide
All talk…again as usual. Penalty the driver and the company kaw kaw…sure these things will unlikely to happen. Until then…sigh.
That’s it. I am not waiting in my car at traffic lights anymore. Will just switch off, leave the car and wait by the road side. I say every body should do the same.
