While Zeekr might call itself a “pure electric vehicle brand” (go look at its official website, a report by CarNewsChina indicates the Chinese carmaker is developing a hybrid system that is expected to make its debut at Auto Shanghai in April 2025. The system will reportedly be used in large SUVs and MPVs, with an official launch reportedly set to take place in the second half of next year.
An Conghui, president of Zhejiang Geely Holding Group, chairman of Geely Auto Group and CEO of Zeekr, previously said in an interview last year that the brand had no plans for hybrid models. However, this changed in July 2024 when he said range extended electric vehicles (REEVs) were being considered.
The shift to include both pure electric and hybrid models was later revealed in August 2024 during an earnings call. At the time, An said Zeekr will launch a flagship SUV featuring a newly developed hybrid system that is said to be better for users in terms of power and range.
The vehicle is said to run purely on electricity at low speeds before switching to the internal combustion engine (ICE) on highways at higher speeds. A month after this, spyshots of a Zeekr 001 with a hybrid powertrain undergoing testing surfaced in China. The hybrid version of the 001 is expected to be introduced after the initial hybrid models slated for next year’s Auto Shanghai.
Zeekr’s decision mimics those of other pure EV brands like Xpeng and Nio, both of which have announced hybrid models, which are popular among Chinese consumers.
Zeekr was originally founded to focus on pure electric vehicles (EVs) while its sister brand, Lynk & Co, developed ICE and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) models. With the recent acquisition of Lynk & Co by Zeekr, parent Geely looks to unify its high-end car brands to provide multi-powertrain offerings.

Smart to concentrate on long range capability vehicle untapped market segment. Due to present battery technology limitations its wise to go hybrid unless you wanna tow a huge powerbank genset behind your car to travel 1000km destination without refilling or charging.
