Polestar 3 gains new entry-level variant – RWD with 111-kWh battery; 299 PS, up to 706 km WLTP EV range

Polestar has announced it has started production of a more affordable variant of the Polestar 3 in the United States. The new ‘Long Range Single motor’ retails for 79,890 euros (about RM373k) in Europe, or USD67,500 (RM299k) in the US – the latter is cheaper when compared to the ‘Long Range Dual motor’ at USD73,400 (RM325k).

According to the company, the entry-level Polestar 3 uses the same battery as the dual-motor variant with a gross energy capacity of 111 kWh (107 kWh net). Charging capacities are the same too at 11 kW AC and 250 kW DC, with the fast-charging option enabling the battery to get from a 10-80% state of charge in just 30 minutes.

As for the motors, there is just one at the rear to drive the wheels rated at 299 PS (295 hp or 220 kW) and 490 Nm of torque. By comparison, the dual-motor variant provides 489 PS (483 hp or 360 kW) and 840 Nm, or 517 PS (510 hp or 380 kW) and 910 Nm when specified with the optional ‘Performance pack’.

The upshot of the lack of a front electric motor is range, with the new addition delivering a WLTP-rated figure of 706 km. That is considerably more than the dual-motor variant that offers 610 km or 560 km, the latter with the aforementioned add-on package.

If you prefer the EPA’s figures, it is 350 miles (563 km) for the ‘Long Range Single motor’, 315 miles (507 km) for the ‘Long Range Dual motor’ and 279 miles (449 km) for the ‘Long range Dual motor with Performance pack’.

Other aspects of the powertrain similar to the dual-motor variants too, including the passive damper system that uses the brand’s Hydraulic Rebound Stops (HRS) and Frequency Selective Damping (FSD). There is also the same Brembo braking system as the rest of the Polestar 3 range.

For options, buyers can choose from six exterior colours, five interior themes and four wheel options. Other add-ons include a 25-speaker Bowers & Wilkins audio system complete with Dolby Atmos, Nappa leather upholstery and high-definition LED pixel headlamps.
