Malaysian bus passengers and motorcyclists will soon only need to use the MyBorderPass app for faster immigration clearance at the two land checkpoints with Singapore. As reported by The Star, this move follows the government’s trial of three apps – MyBorderPass, MyRentas and MyTrip – with MyBorderPass being the one chosen.
Since June this year, bus passengers and motorcyclists have been using the MyTrip app when passing through the Sultan Abu Bakar Customs, Immigration and Quarantine (CIQ) complex (KSAB) at the Second Link. It is expected that MyTrip will be phased out at KSAB, with plans to replace it with MyBorderPass in the coming days.
At the Bangunan Sultan Iskandar CIQ in Johor Baru (BSI), bus passengers have been using the MyRentas app, while motorcyclists used MyBorderPass, which supports QR code and facial recognition. The two bus lanes at BSI have since been integrated with MyBorderPass, with the home ministry saying the six motorcycle lanes – three entering and three exiting – at BSI are using MyBorderPass.
State works, transportation, infrastructure and communications committee chairman Mohamad Fazli Mohamad Salleh welcomed to transition to a single app, as it would make it more convenient and less confusing for travellers.
“We have seen how effective the facial recognition system has been at the motorcycle lanes in BSI. We hope this technology will help clear more bus passengers without issues. However, if there is a problem, passengers can use their QR code or go to the manual counter,” he said.
On the matter of the QR code system for cars and lorries, Mohamad Fazli said it is still in the proof-of-concept stage as it involves multiple passengers in a single vehicle. “Sometimes a car or lorry may have both Malaysians and foreigners, so we need to ensure the system can capture all these details,” he said. Eventually, the state aims to expand QR code and facial recognition facilities to all foreign travellers, similar to autogates.
