JPJ issues summonses to 25 express and tour buses for not having a 2nd driver during special Penang op

As a result of not having a second driver, the road transport department issued summonses to 25 express and tour buses during a special operation at three toll plazas in Penang. For trips exceeding 300 km or four hours continuously, a second driver is compulsory when starting the journey.

JPJ director Zulkifly Ismail had previously said that companies that fail to comply with regulations will face legal action, including being prohibited from operating.

According to the JPJ’s Facebook posting, the operation started at 10pm on December 24, 2024 and ended at 7am on Christmas Day at both sides of the Juru, Bukit Tambun and Sultan Abdul Halim Muadzam Shah toll plazas.

“JPJ also compounded an express bus because driver did not have a driving licence as well as a container lorry as the driver was underaged,” the department said in a Facebook post. Action was also taken against 23 buses for not having driver’s logbooks or not maintaining them and one for not having a tour guide. In total, 273 summonses were issued for various offences.
