Renault has cautiously weighed in on the Nissan-Honda merger announcement, saying it “will consider all options based on the best interest of the Group and its stakeholders.”
The French carmaker said in a December 23 statement that it acknowledged the announcements made by Nissan and Honda, “which are still at an early stage”, and will continue to “execute its strategy and to roll-out projects that create value for the Group, including projects already launched within the Alliance.”
Renault owns 17% of Nissan and 18.7% via a French trust, making it Nissan’s top shareholder (35.7%). Three days ago, Nissan and Honda signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to explore a merger, widely seen as a pool-resources move to stand up better to Chinese competition as well as save the ailing Nissan.
The two companies aim to finalise the terms of the merger (including the share transfer plan) by June, while Mitsubishi aims to decide by the end of next month whether to join to make it a threesome. Nissan currently owns 24% of Mitsubishi.
