Honda signs agreement with Renesas to develop system-on-chip for 0 Series software-defined vehicles

Honda and Renesas Electronics have signed an agreement for the development of a high-performance, system-on-chip for software defined vehicles, the companies have announced.

The software-defined vehicles such as those of the 0 Series unveiled as prototypes at CES 2025 will adopt a centralised electrical/electronic architecture which combines multiple control units, or ECUs tasked with controlling vehicle functions into a single ECU.

The core ECU, which serves as the heart of the software-defined vehicle, will handle functions such as ADAS and automated driving, powertrain control as well as comfort features, on a single ECU. This will require a system-on-chip that provides greater processing performance than traditional systems, while minimising increases in energy consumption, says Honda.

Honda and Renesas have come to an agreement to develop a high-performance system-on-chip solution for cor ECUs, and the use of 3 nm automotive process technology will help achieve a significant reduction in power consumption, Honda said.

This will also realise a system that uses multi-die chiplet technology Renesas’ fifth-generation system-on-chip with an AI accelerator optimised for AI software, developed independently by Honda. Chiplet technology enables the flexibility required for the creation of customised solutions, and future upgrades for gains in functionality and performance, according to the company.

This agreement between Honda and Renesas follows their close collaboration over many years, according to the carmaker, and the agreement will expedite integration of advanced semiconductor and software innovations into the upcoming Honda 0 Series of software-defined vehicles, it said.
