The road transport department (JPJ) is investigating the issue of ‘total loss’ vehicles being reused on the road, following directives by Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) to insurance companies, reported New Straits Times.
JPJ director-general Datuk Aedy Fadly Ramli told Mingguan Malaysia in an interview that stricter compliance with auction standards is required for vehicles categorised as Beyond Economic Repair (BER) and Actual Total Loss (ATL).
“Compliance requires further scrutiny to prevent the resale of vehicles deemed unfit for the road but still in circulation. It is disheartening that commercial vehicles declared as total loss by insurance companies are being reused,” Aedy Fadly said, adding that the issue remains a significant burden given the large number of such vehicles on the road, NST reported.
Aedy Fadly admitted that there is room for improvement among senior officers and enforcement staff, and acknowledged reports of corruption involving JPJ officers in the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) records, though he stressed that such cases are not severe, saying he is confident that “JPJ officers are performing their duties with full integrity,” he said.
The JPJ director-general nonetheless emphasised a zero-tolerance approach towards violations of integrity. “There will be no compromise on any violations, including corruption or abuse of power. I will not offer a second chance and will take appropriate action in accordance with laws and civil service regulations,” he said.
Since 2016, just 18 cases have been recorded in MACC reports for action taken against errant officers, and most of these cases have been resolved, Aedy Fadly said. Only four cases under the MACC were received by the JPJ last year, and the road transport department is “currently investigating these to determine the necessary action, whether disciplinary measures or other penalties,” the JPJ D-G said.

I believe the article meant to write ATL – Actual Total Loss, instead of ATF – Automotive Treatment Facility.
