Mechanic caught by JPJ for riding motorcycle without road tax for 23 years – up to RM2k fine, six months jail

A 61-year-old mechanic was detained by the Perak road transport department (JPJ) after he was caught riding a motorcycle that had not had its road tax renewed for 23 years since 2002. As reported by The Star, the man was held for questioning and his motorcycle seized during a routine inspection as part of a Chinese New Year enforcement operation along Jalan Silibin-Ipoh.

“Strict action will be taken against the motorcycle owner for violating Section 23(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, which requires all motor vehicles on the road to have a valid motor vehicle licence (LKM),” said Perak JPJ chief Mohammad Yusoff Abustan.

“This offence is serious because the LKM is not only proof that the vehicle has been registered but also ensures that the owner pays the required road tax and meets the vehicle safety requirements,” he continued.

Mohammad Yusoff said the mechanic claimed that he only rode his motorcycle within residential areas and not on the main roads. He added that vehicles that do not have a valid LKM were at risk of not being covered by insurance in the event of an accident, which causes issues for the victim and the vehicle owner.

“The offence of not renewing the LKM can be subject to a fine of up to RM2,000 or imprisonment not exceeding six months, or both, if convicted,” he said.

Funny thing is, it is actually legal to drive cars with those plate in West Malaysia but with the caveat these plates have to renew the permit in order to stay here.

  • Paying road tax is not a problem. The problem is prior to renewing road tax, the motorbike has to get insurance and many feel is not worth it to get their motorbike insured, afterall, they might be using a motorbike since thrir grandfather time.
