United States president Donald Trump has said the 25% tariff on goods from Mexico and Canada will take effect from March 4, 2025. “They’re going to have to have a tariff. So, what they have to do is build their car plants, frankly, and other things in the United States, in which case they have no tariffs,” he said, as reported by Reuters.
Additionally, Trump will the increase tariffs on all Chinese imports to 20%, which is up from the previous 10% stated in a prior executive order posted in February. He noted in an amendment that China (along with Mexico and Canada) did not take adequate steps to reduce the influx of synthetic opioids, including fentanyl, to the US that “constituted an unusual and extraordinary threat.”
The governments of Mexico and Canada are said to respond to Trump’s move, with Ontario premier Doug Ford saying vehicle plants in Michigan are likely to shut down within a week and that he would halt nickel shipments as well as cross-border transmission of electricity from Ontario to the US. Meanwhile, China’s commerce ministry vowed countermeasures and urged the US to “immediately withdraw” its tariffs, which are described as “unreasonable, groundless and harmful to others.”
In the coming weeks, Trump is expected to issue reciprocal tariffs to remedy what he deems to be “unfair treatment” of US exports in foreign markets. This includes a possible 25% tariff on imported cars, which could come as soon as April 2 this year.
