There is no regulation requiring heavy vehicles to have the same tyre type they originally came with, Puspakom CEO Mahmood Razak Bahman has said, according to the New Straits Times.
A lorry owner was apparently cited in a news report as saying that a Puspakom regulation on tyre type was among the causes of tyre rentals from ‘cosmetic agents’ to pass inspections, which Mahmood Razak said was untrue.
“I have actually checked this matter. According to the regulations, the vehicle must use tyres that match the size specified in the plan,” he said today at a press conference, adding that different tyre brands and even tubeless tyres can be used, as long as they match the approved size.
“Optional tyre types, including radial and size variations, are listed in a table provided by the road transport department (JPJ) to determine the available alternatives. If it (a vehicle) is supposed to have 16-inch tyres but instead uses 17-inch ones, we will fail it. That is in accordance with the regulations,” said Mahmood Razak.
In early January, JPJ director-general Datuk Aedy Fadly Ramli acknowledged the existence of ‘cosmetic agents’ renting out tyres to help heavy vehicles pass inspections, and said the department would work with the domestic trade and cost of living ministry (KPDN) to address the issue.
