MoT looking into securing more temporary vehicles for those affected by Putra Heights gas pipeline fire: Loke

The transport ministry says that it is looking into securing more vehicles to temporarily help residents affected by the Putra Heights gas pipeline fire that happened earlier this week. Transport minister Anthony Loke said the ministry had contacted several companies to help victims, as The Star reports.

One of those which responded was online automotive marketplace Carro, which is loaning out 30 vehicles. “Any victims who need these cars can register with them,” he said. Yesterday, Chery Malaysia announced that it was providing 50 cars for the temporary usage of those affected by the mishap.

“We are also looking at how many vehicles are needed and are contacting other companies to have more temporary vehicles for victims,” he said after visiting mobile counters set up by the road transport department (JPJ) at the Putra Heights mosque. The JPJ mobile team will assist victims of the fire print essential documents such as driving licence, road tax and vehicle ownership certificate for free.

Loke added that more than 70 motorcycles were also destroyed in the fire. “We are working to get motorcycle sponsorship and after it is obtained, I will make an announcement,” he said.

According to news reports, over 277 homes and 399 vehicles were affected by the gas pipeline leak fire, with over 100 families housed in temporary shelters. Many of the cars that were left behind as residents fled showed signs of damage from the extreme heat, with images of melted body panels, charred paint and broken glass going viral.
