Mitsubishi pauses US shipments due to Trump’s tariffs

Mitsubishi has temporarily paused shipping cars to dealers in the United States as a result of president Donald Trump’s 25% auto tariffs, Automotive News reports. “We are holding vehicles at the port until we have additional visibility on tariffs and decisions made on next steps,” a spokesperson told the news outlet.

At the moment, the brand’s dealers in the US have 20,245 vehicles in stock for sale, which represents nearly 100 days’ worth of supply. These vehicles are not affected by auto tariffs that came into effect on April 3, 2025.

However, customer incentives for the Outlander, the brand’s best-selling car, will be reduced in anticipation of the inevitable price hike later this year. According to the report, buyers will get just USD1,000 in “customer cash” with the SUV instead of USD1,500. Additionally, the financing rate for qualified buyers has shot up to 4.99% from 2.99%. All Mitsubishi cars sold in the US is built in Japan, which leaves it particularly vulnerable to Trump’s tariffs.

With this move, Mitsubishi joins the likes of Lotus, Jaguar Land Rover, Volkswagen and Audi in holding shipments of cars to dealers. On a related note, Volvo discontinued the S90 in the US because it is built and imported from China.
