This is the Nissan Frontier Pro, a product of the Zhengzhou-Nissan joint-venture that’ll launch in China later this year before going to other markets, which will be announced later (fingers crossed for Malaysia). Nissan’s first plug-in hybrid (PHEV) is also its first hybrid pick-up truck.
‘Rugged Tech’ is what Nissan calls the styling, and the Shanghai-based designers were inspired by the 1980s Nissan D21 Hardbody pick-up truck‘s three-slot bonnet opening, reimagined here as the frontal lighting signature. The Nissan logo is illuminated and 18-inch alloys wrapped in 265/65 rubber are standard, as are five-link rear suspension and intelligent AWD.
The PHEV powertrain is made up of a 1.5 litre four-cylinder turbo engine and a transmission-mounted electric motor. Combined, the system delivers over 408 PS and 800 Nm of torque, and an EV-only range of 135 km NEDC is targeted. An electromechanical rear diff lock and four drive modes – Hybrid, Pure Electric, Performance and Snow – will be available.
The cabin looks a little generic to these eyes – neither does it look particularly rugged in design – but a panoramic roof, 10-inch LCD instrument panel, 14.6-inch centre touchscreen and front-seat heating/ventilation/massage are welcome conveniences. There’s also a power-retractable bed cover and 6 kW vehicle-to-load (V2L). So, BYD Shark or this?
