smart Malaysia has posted up teasers of the smart #5 with two close-up shots of the EV, the second of which showing clearly the #5 badge. “Bold new adventures are just ahead. The spirit of discovery is calling — are you ready?” the caption reads. Launching soon?

The #5 is a modern smart that’s unlike any other before it – apart from being the brand’s largest car to date, it’s a squarish and rugged-looking SUV that’s pretty handsome. At 4,705 mm long, 1,920 mm wide and 1,705 mm tall, with a 2,900 mm wheelbase, this five-seat SUV is even longer than the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Honda CR-V.

Revealed in August 2024, the #5 has four powertrain options in China – RWD 340 PS (250 kW), RWD 363 PS (267 kW), AWD 587 PS (432 kW) and AWD 646 PS (475 kW) – the latter is the Brabus, which was only revealed last month. The AWD cars share the same front motor with 224 PS (165 kW); at the back, the starter car has a 363 PS motor while the Brabus gets a 421 PS (310 kW) unit.

Two battery packs are offered – a 76-kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) unit for the RWD variants (China’s loose CLTC range from 570 km to 660 km) and a 100-kWh nickel manganese cobalt (NMC) battery for the AWD cars (range from 720 to 740 km)

The smart #5 isn’t an SUV bodystyle sister of the #1 and #3; instead, it sits on a PMA2+ platform with an 800V electrical architecture, so there’s support for DC fast charging at 4C speeds – ‘C’ indicates how many times a battery can be charged in one hour. The company says that 500 km of range can be gained from just 15 minutes of charging.

As you can see above, the dashboard is covered in screens, which comprise a 10.3-inch digital instrument cluster and twin 2.5K 13-inch AMOLED centre and front passenger touchscreens.

There’s also an augmented reality-enabled head-up display and a 20-speaker Sennheiser sound system with a detachable portable speaker. Sennheiser is a headphone specialist from Germany but we haven’t really seen its name in cars before, so this is a cool collab.

The Malaysia Autoshow 2025 is happening this week and smart is participating, so the #5 could be previewed at MAEPS Serdang. If so, it will be a departure from the prolonged build-up that Pro-Net typically orchestrates for its new models. We’ll see, stay tuned.

  • The problem is their pricing is at premium segment level, but honestly their build quality and specs don’t make you feel like you’re in a premium car. They’re more akin to something like a BYD, hence you don’t see a lot of smart on the road

Actually alot of smart owners are Mercedes owners. They have respectable sales numbers. But you hardly see one on the road is because they are 2nd, 3rd, 4th car of the family.
Is positioned as premium car, and the service cost is also merc level kind of expensive.
In my opinion, all good products but non of the smart is perfect. #1 styling is more feminine, #3 has this glass roof without the electronic sunshade of #1, #5 styling is too quirky to be mainstream and likely pricey.
