ASEAN Summit 2025 – KL road closures, diversions for six highways and 25 major roads; May 23-28

Malaysia is the ASEAN chair this year and we’ll host the Asean Summit 2025, which will be held at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC) on May 26 and 27. As such, there’s a long list of highways and major roads that will be closed from May 23-28 as heads of states fly in, move around and depart. It’ll probably be like when Chinese president Xi Jinping was in town last month, but with many different convoys.

According to Bukit Aman traffic investigation and enforcement department (JSPT) director Datuk Seri Mohd Yusri Hassan, 789 traffic police officers will be on duty throughout this period, handling tasks such as VVIP motorcade escorts and traffic control.

“Our assets are already on standby, including 36 cars, 313 high-powered motorcycles, 190 normal motorcycles, and tow-trucks,” he said at a press conference today, adding that a dry run will be conducted on Wednesday and Thursday (May 21-22).

Road closures will happen between 8am and 8pm. “Routes affected include those to Kuala Lumpur city centre, KLIA, Subang Air Force base, Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre, Istana Negara, and hotels for foreign delegates,” he said, advising the public to avoid routes involved and use public transport.

The JSPT chief also warned that commercial vehicles are prohibited from entering the city centre during peak hours and vehicles parked haphazardly will be towed away. “We hope for public cooperation to avoid blocking traffic with their parking. Otherwise, we will have to tow the vehicles,” he warned. The affected routes are:

Too much to take note of? You probably shouldn’t bother about the specific roads because it sounds like the whole of KL city centre will be affected and there will be a spillover effect too.

Heed the advice and take public transport if you’re working in KL. The trains will be packed, so just rough it out for a few days. If you’re driving, expect delays.

  • menyusahkan rakyat saja. why don’t they have these big important meetings on islands like langkawi? look at south korea, the current apec summit is held on jeju island instead of seoul. it will save everyone a lot of trouble.
