While some automakers are reassessing their commitment to sell only electric vehicles (EVs) by a particular year, others have been more cautious and calculated in their approach. One such automaker is BMW, which shares the same “multi-pathway” approach to carbon neutrality as Toyota by providing a variety of powertrain types to meet the different needs of customers in various markets.
At BMW’s 105th annual general meeting, board chairman Oliver Zipse reiterated that the company is on the right track by continuing to provide petrol, diesel and hybrid vehicles alongside current and upcoming EVs – the Neue Klasse is coming. The company also has an eye on hydrogen-powered vehicles, with the first – developed in partnership with Toyota – set to be launched in 2028.
“While other manufacturers are reversing course or adjusting their strategy, we are on exactly the right track. Even policymakers are starting to come around: the new German federal government supports a broad approach to technology, while the European Commission seeks to make Europe more competitive. The ‘Green Industrial Deal’ finally considers climate protection and the economy in tandem. That is a good thing,” said Zipse.
“We take ambitious political goals seriously but we don’t believe in technically one-sided regulations that limit supply. The same principle applies to the circular economy. Here, too, only a comprehensive approach can enable and stimulate investment. Because, as a standalone technology, e-mobility leads down a dead-end street – that much is now clear. The differences are simply too great, even just within Europe,” he added.
These differences are in reference to the needs of consumers as well as the local environment of a market that BMW has a presence in. As an example, Zipse pointed out that Belgium, which offers incentives, saw electric and hybrid vehicles quickly became the most popular new cars, reaching a market share of over 60% in 2024. On the flipside, EVs only made up 4% of all vehicles sold in Italy last year.
“Is that the fault of the products? Certainly not. Is it because of the customers? Definitely not. The all-important question is rather: how do we effectively cut CO2? Certainly not by thinking in black and white. Supporting one solution does not necessarily mean opposing another. Our approach proves this time and again – and remains effective. We all need to be much more opportunity-driven, guided by entry – not exit – strategies,” explained Zipse.
“Political goals must reflect market realities – and also be viable for businesses. Global investment is already looking ahead to 2030, and especially 2035. That is why the upcoming review of EU targets will be so decisive. It is our chance to improve the system. Europe needs a top-performing automotive and supplier industry. We are fighting for this and pushing back against negative developments,” he continued.
Following an encouraging 2024 that saw sales of electrified models from the BMW Group hit 593,150 units (up 4.8%), the company is continuing the momentum in 2025. In the first quarter of this year, deliveries of the group’s electrified models reached 157,487 units, which is 28.5% more than in the same period last year.

every countries will take steps to support their own industries, its the chinese way of doing things, they subsidize because they can afford to do so, they want brands from their country to reach the very top. if you are capable, i believe you will support your son to study in harvard, and your poorer friends will talk behind your back about how you give your son free money to live their university life, all because they cannot afford to.
So now it’s either China will prove BMW right or BMW will prove China right.
