Driver seen dangerously driving overloaded Perodua Axia in viral video had prior head injuries, says police

The police have identified a man seen dangerously driving an overloaded Perodua Axia along the Dengkil-Banting road in a viral video, reports NST. In the video, the car driven by the man was carrying an excessive load including rubbish, baskets, bed frames and various other items strapped to the roof, with some of the items falling onto the road and obstructing traffic.

District police chief Asst Comm Norhizam Bahaman said the police came across the viral video after it was uploaded to a Facebook account at 10am yesterday. “Following this, we located the vehicle and found it along Jalan Dengkil-Banting about an hour later on the same day,” he said in a statement.

Preliminary investigations revealed the 59-year-old local driver holds a valid driving licence and had proper documentation for his vehicle. Norhizam added that further checks revealed the driver had been involved in a road accident several years ago which resulted in head injuries. The driver claimed he was not feeling well in relation to the accident.

Since the incident, which took place on Monday (May 19), the man has been released on bail by his family. However, his vehicle has been detained under Section 60 of the Road Transport Act 1987 for inspection and further action.

“The district police headquarters is conducting a thorough investigation and advises the public not to speculate in ways that could interfere with the process,” said Norhizam.
