The Geely Star Wish will be launched in Thailand this year. The five-door hatchback EV, which is called the Geome Xingyuan in China, will also come to Malaysia this year as the Proton eMas 5, as previewed at the recent Malaysia Autoshow 2025.
Displayed at the 2025 Bangkok International Motor Show (BIMS) in March, the Star Wish will be Geely’s second model in Thailand after the EX5 (which we know as the Proton eMas 7) and the EV will debut there this year. This was revealed to AutolifeThailand by Geely’s Thai distributor Thonburi Neustern, which brought a group of media to join Geely’s Auto Shanghai 2025 programme last month.
Launched in China in October 2024, the Xingyuan can be seen as a rival of the BYD Dolphin. However, it’s much more organic in shape than BYD’s electric hatch, with smooth lines, gentle curves and design that’s a bit smart-like. At 4,135 mm long and 1,805 mm wide, and with a wheelbase of 2,650 mm, the Xingyuan is smaller than the Dolphin.
In China, two powertrains are offered, both with a CATL-sourced lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery that takes 21 minutes to get from a 30-80% state of charge, along with a rear-mounted electric motor, which frees up space for a deep 70L frunk.
The smaller battery is a 30.12 kWh unit good for 310 km range in China’s generous CLTC standard, paired to a 79 PS (58 kW) and 130 Nm motor. The top variant gets a 40.16 kWh battery, 410 km range and a 116 PS (85 kW)/150 Nm motor.
According to AutolifeThailand, only the larger battery will be considered for Thailand, and there are even considerations of a 50 kWh battery to increase range and comply with local assembly conditions. If available, a 50 kWh battery would also be good for Proton, as the 40.16 kWh battery’s 300+ km real-world range sounds a bit low for demanding Malaysians.
The publication mooted a price of below 500,000 baht (RM64,848) for the Thai-market Star Wish – half a million is the latest price ballpark for compact Dolphin-type EVs such as the MG4 and the new Aion UT. Bear in mind that Malaysia has a minimum price of RM100k for CBU EVs, and the eMas 5 will start life as a China import, like its bigger eMas 7 sibling.
There are five variants in China, and available equipment include 16-inch wheels, LED lights at both ends, a 14.6-inch infotainment touchscreen (or a smaller 10.1-inch unit), 256-colour ambient lighting, six speakers (or four), an external power supply capable of 3.3 kW, manual or powered front seats, 8.8-inch digital meter panel, 50W air-cooled wireless charger and automatic air-con with rear vents. Full ADAS too, of course.
What do you think of the Geely Xingyuan, which will battle with Perodua’s upcoming EV in the budget electric segment.

time for cheap ev in malaysia too
CHINA subsidised EV so that the world can enjoy high quality and cheap EV.
CHINA Namba 1
Proton dibolakan oleh Geely. Malu weh Chery come late to Malaysia and still can make Malaysia Asean Hub. Geely and Proton already 6 years cannot do anything but just rebadge locally. Apalah DRB Hicom and Geely is thinking all these years.
If Geely can sell at below rm65k in Thailand, it will be interesting to see if proton emas5 can match it price for price. Logic is that if proton hv to sell at higher price then proton’s localisation and admin cost is making cars more expensive. That should tell proton CEO to do something about proton’s supply chain. Why cannot reach Geely level of efficiency or at least fight for a place in Geely supply chain
Yeay Malaysian will get this RM100k National car later than Thailand!
This is how car companies and our friendly neighbours pay revenge with Malaysia stupid car policies of decades.
Tahniah Tun M, Bapa Permotoran Thailand.
