Following last year’s Concept Skytop, BMW has now brought a new show car for this year’s Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este that takes place on the shores of Lake Como in Italy. Called the Speedtop, it takes the form of an elegant shooting brake that the company says reimagines the sporty Touring.
Sharing the eye-catching design language seen on the Skytop, the Speedtop sports a shark-nose front end that is accompanied by slim headlamps and an illuminated kidney grille. There’s also a distinctive central spline from the bonnet that continues over the roof to the rear spoiler, which is accentuated by a paintjob where the colour gradient shifts from Floating Sunstone Maroon to “Floating Sundown Silver.
Broad shoulders highlight the car’s athletic stance, with other noteworthy cues being the steeply raked rear window and two-tone, 14-spoke wheels that were designed specifically for the Speedtop. You’ll also notice the lack of traditional door handles on both doors.
Inside, you’ll be reminded of the M8, which is the car the Speedtop is based on. The general architecture and layout of the screens and controls are pretty much identical, but with heaps more luxury that showcases the bespoke craftsmanship and choice of premium materials.
As an example, the sparkling brown tone of the Floating Sunstone Maroon exterior paint is carried over into the interior. Meanwhile, the brown Sundown Maroon surfaces pair nicely with the light Moonstone White of the seats.
Behind the seats, you’ll find a leather-covered and illuminated storage area for overnight bags, while the boot also gets the same treatment should you need to bring larger items. BMW has partnered with Italian manufacturer Schedoni so that buyers receive bags specifically designed for the car upon delivery.
Yes, this isn’t just a concept to lust over because BMW intends to produce 70 units of the Speedtop for the most discerning collectors and enthusiasts. That’s 20 more than the Skytop, and you should expect it to cost a pretty penny. BMW doesn’t have a whole lot to say about the powertrain, merely stating it will get the most powerful V8 it currently offers. This is likely the S63 4.4 litre biturbo V8 petrol engine that outputs as much as 635 PS (617 hp or 460 kW) and 750 Nm.
