Alpine to launch V6 tri-motor hybrid supercar in 2028

Alpine plans to launch a mid-engined supercar in 2028, with a turbocharged V6 hybrid powertrain that outputs over 1,000 bhp (1,013 PS), reported Autocar. This will feature twin motors on the front axle to make an all-wheel-drive layout, according to the report.

While the French brand is making its product line-up increasingly battery-electric, it has decided to use a powertrain with internal combustion for its upcoming supercar, appearing not to rule out future hybrid models. “We are not selling electric cars. We are selling sporty cars, passion cars, exclusive cars,” Alpine CEO Philippe Krief was quoted as saying at the debut of the Alpine A390.

According to Autocar, the upcoming Alpine supercar will be powered by a V6 engine and electric motors, both to be developed by the Renault Group’s Hypertech Alpine research and development division, located at brand’s Formula 1 powertrain facility in Viry-Châtillon in France.

The Ferrari SF90 Stradale is likely to be a key benchmark for the upcoming Alpine supercar as Krief had previously worked in research and development at the Italian marque when the SF90 was being developed, according to the publication. Instead of the slimline axial-flux hybrid motor design by Yasa as used on the SF90, the Alpine will get radial-flux motors designed by Hypertech Alpine.

“Axial flux is perfect between the engine and a gearbox. But on the front axle, if you have a big diameter, it doesn’t matter,” said Krief of the electric motor design.

Alpine’s previously-shown Alpenglow Hy6 concept car featured a 3.5 litre V6 engine, albeit one that was shown as a hydrogen-fuelled concept. The Alpenglow concept’s powertrain was claimed to output 740 PS, and rev to 9,000 rpm.

When it reaches production, the Alpine supercar will be priced at over 200,000 euros (RM957,300) in order to be profitable. “If we’re able to sell a 155,000 euro (RM741,907) Renault 5 Turbo, you think there could be room for Alpine above that,” Krief said.
