Geely Galaxy M9 revealed – flagship 6-seater PHEV SUV, over 1,500 km range, 30-inch touchscreen

Geely has revealed the flagship of its new energy Galaxy lineup, the Geely Galaxy M9 – a large six-seater plug-in hybrid SUV that is essentially a production version of last year’s Galaxy Starship concept. The car joins two other recently-introduced three-row luxury crossovers from elsewhere in the Geely Group, the Lynk & Co 900 and the Zeekr 9X.

Being the more mainstream version, the M9 isn’t quite as imposing as the other two, sporting a sleeker, more conventional look. At the front, you get a full-width light bar integrating the projector LED headlights and a starry motif – repeated in the rear – made up of 816 LEDs, sitting above a grille-less nose and T-shaped bumper corners.

Moving to the side, the M9 bucks the recent trend of flush door handles, persevering with conventional pull-type units. They form what little adornment there is on the body sides, along with prominent chrome side window trim and upright C-pillars. Full-width taillights, a curious pair of fake exhaust outlets and multi-spoke alloy wheels complete the look.

Inside, the M9 sports a massive 30-inch touchscreen that forms a single unbroken display for the centre and front passenger, just like the Lynk & Co 900. The Flyme Auto infotainment system’s built-in generative AI functionality is said to feature the industry’s first “end-to-end” large language model and the world’s first dynamic and adaptive memory, whatever that means. You also get a legrest for the front passenger, Flyme Sound speakers and a 9.1 litre refrigerator at the rear of the centre console.

Meanwhile, second-row passengers sit on sumptuous captain’s chairs with an 11-layer structure and a ten-point massage function, watching videos through a separate roof monitor. The “full-size” third-row, meanwhile, gets the same flat floor as those in front and can be reclined electrically up to 120 degrees. A 180 mm “walkway” between the second-row seats aids entry and egress for the last row.

Under the skin, the M9 rides on an updated version of Geely’s Global Energy Architecture (GEA Evo) and utilises its performance-oriented EM-P powertrain. One difference from other models equipped with this system is the use of dual in-wheel motors on the rear axle instead of centrally-mounted units, presumably to increase third-row room and luggage space. These help get the car from zero to 100 km/h in 4.5 seconds, provide a fuel consumption figure of 4.8 litres per 100 km and deliver a total range of over 1,500 km.

No technical details have been released yet, but expect the M9 to mirror the powertrain options found in the 900, with 190 PS/300 Nm 1.5 litre and 254 PS/350 Nm 2.0 litre turbo petrol engines mated to a three-speed dedicated hybrid transmission (DHT), a 218 PS/350 Nm front motor and a 313 PS/350 Nm rear motor. The triple-motor version, meanwhile, bumps outputs at the rear to a staggering 462 PS and 560 Nm of torque.

As with other newer Geely models, the M9 features the company’s latest G-Pilot suite of driver assists. The H5 system fitted to this car utilises a single lidar sensor on the top of the windscreen and delivers highly automated highway driving without the need for high-definition mapping.

The M9’s debut in Milan suggests that it could be offered globally, which opens the door for it to be sold in Malaysia as a Proton alongside the upcoming eMas 7 PHEV. If it does, expect the car to be by far and away the national carmaker’s most expensive model ever, putting even the X90 in the shade. Would you like to see the M9 on our shores? Very nice 3 rows PHEV SUV.

While this has missed out the sliding door like TYT Century or Kia Carnival.

Maybe the 2nd row can be digital slidable, controlled by the driver for ease of access to/from 3rd row.

My own experience driving modern EVs…
Touchscreen controls and too much nagging! Sometimes I don’t even know what the boings are about.
Bring back buttons and physical controls please. Touchscreens look cool but they are downright dangerous.

Agree. Nothing beats a tactile rotary dials for controlling the HVAC, media system etc. Also a simple mechanical pull door latch safer and less complicated than electronic buttons or those complicated flush door handles. Unnecessary complications.

Also true about all the beeps… beeps should be followed by a display message or speech based warning over the stereo.

    • Yes or no,

Yes to Touchscreen – If the voice command input is good then buttons is not necessary. sitting in Nio las month for a 2hrs drive in Shanghai, voice input is almost flawless.

No to touchscreen – Nagging voice input system, this will need a lot of data to refine in order to eliminate buttons. Just not yet for Malaysia.

When Geely L6 PHEV sedan & L7 PHEV SUV will come into Malaysia?. Proton a bit slow in bringing in other Geely products. Chery PHEV Tiggo 7 would likely come in before this Q4. Regards.

  • Very bold to compete and same name with Huawei Aito M9, while there is another Grand alternative Aito M8 too.

While continue to face sales robust Toyota Sienna and sister Granvia.

Nahh. Most Malaysians in upper B40 and lower M40 looking for exora replacement. Not another perdana SUV. Please Proton, back to basic. Cover segment that you should be covering instead of focusing on grand segment.
