For the month of May 2025, Perodua recorded the highest number of vehicle registrations with 31,398 units, according to data from the road transport department (JPJ). This brings the national carmaker’s year-to-date (YTD) tally up to 143,860 units, which is about 41% of its sales target of 350,000 units this year.
In second place, Proton managed 12,751 registrations, bringing its YTD total to 59,133 units. It is followed by Toyota that saw 11,183 registrations (47,424 units YTD), while Honda managed to secure fourth place with 6,065 units (30,976 units YTD). Note that the brands mentioned up until now are currently the only ones to have at least a five-digit YTD total, with the exception of six-digit Perodua.
It’s also worth mentioning that the top seven brands in May 2025 are placed exactly as they were in April 2025, with Jaecoo continuing to appear in the top five by taking the fifth spot with 1,768 units for a YTD total of 7,566 units. Meanwhile, electric-only brand, BYD, managed sixth with 1,148 units (4,355 units YTD) registered in May, and Mitsubishi is seventh with 1,111 registrations (5,836 units YTD).
With customer cars arriving, Tesla shot up the rankings last month to take eighth place with 1,075 units (1,810 units YTD), the highest single-month result so far this year. As such, the American EV maker edged out Mercedes-Benz in ninth, which saw a significant increase from April 2025 to 976 units (3,881 units YTD), as well as Chery in tenth with 794 units (4,107 units YTD).
Beyond the top ten, there is Mazda in 11th with 683 units (3,554 units YTD), BMW in 12th with 635 units (3,053 units YTD) and Lexus in 13th with 593 units (2,264 units YTD). Nissan has remained rather consistent with over 500 units being registered every month this year, and May 2025 saw it take 14th with 574 registrations for a YTD total of 2,964 units.
Further down the order, there’s Isuzu in 15th with 493 units (2,532 units YTD), Ford in 16th with 429 units (2,013 units YTD) and Great Wall Motor in 17th with 412 units (1,842 units YTD). In the bottom three, we have Suzuki in 18th with 226 units (731 units YTD), which is the brand’s highest single-month result so far.
It is followed by MINI that makes its way back to the top 20 in May 2025 at 19th with 212 units (858 units YTD), while Porsche is 20th with 183 units (1,077 units YTD). JPJ includes recon cars in its data, which may influence the number of registrations of some brands.
